AEW is introducing a new championship in the company
AEW is one of the major promotions, which was formed in 2019 by Tony Khan and other major stars. The company has risen to a level, where it is considered the second-biggest promotion in the industry. The company has a big pool of wrestlers and there are a number of champions in various divisions. With the Forbidden Door, AEW Stars are also open to compete in a number of other big promotions and compete for the titles.
The company currently has nine championships and twelve champions. Although this is considered over, AEW CEO Tony Khan has opened up saying that he is interested in introducing yet another championship for AEW, however, the title is unique and will make the company stand out.
Tony Khan interested in the AEW Mixed Tag Team Championship
AEW CEO, Tony Khan at AEW Double or Nothing 2024 Post-Show Media Scrum addressed the media and spoke about his idea of introducing the AEW Mixed Tag Team Championships to make the division more competitive and stronger.
Tony Khan said that they have been in discussions on adding potential championships. Khan claimed that the company is merging with strong rivalries.
Tony Khan said,
“We’ve talked a lot about potential additions in terms of championships. Right now, we have strong rivalries emerging. We’re still trying to build the depth back to the strongest it’s ever been.”
Khan then said that he is interested in bringing the mixed tag team championships. He feels like the title would differentiate their promotion from other major promotions.
Khan said,
“We’re going to keep getting depth back and getting the division stronger. Those are interesting championships, I also think something different we could do here, that I have interest in, would be mixed tag team championships. I think a lot of people would be interested in that too. That’s different than what other major promotions have, and I think it would set AEW apart. I’m interested in mixed tag team championships.”
At present, only the Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) is the only major promotion to have mixed tag team titles in the pro-wrestling industry. AEW Couples Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo brought the AAA Mixed Tag Team titles to AEW. Will the AEW Mixed Tag Team Championship introduction, open up a new division for other major promotions?
