CM Punk made his return with AEW in 2021!
Following his WWE exit due to creative frustration and burnout and subsequent retirement, many fans were hopeful that ‘The Second City Saint’ CM Punk would one day step back into the squared circle and return to WWE.
While Punk came out of retirement after a stint in MMA and broadcasting, he signed with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), making his debut in August 2021.
What happened?
However, the Second City Saint left the promotion unceremoniously in 2023. At AEW All In 2023, Punk and Jack Perry were involved in a backstage argument, which turned physical moments before the match between CM Punk and Samoa Joe.
After the show, it was reported that Punk and Perry were suspended, and an investigation committee was assigned to investigate it. Following the reports and suggestions of the AEW officials, Tony Khan fired Punk and permanently terminated his contract due to disciplinary actions.
WWE return
The Second City Saint at WWE Survivor Series: WarGames 2023 in his hometown of Chicago, made his return, which was greeted by one of the loudest pops of all time. He has since been competing in the promotion and was engaged in a feud of the year with Drew McIntyre.
Punk also completed his dream of headlining WrestleMania and is now set to battle John Cena for the Undisputed WWE title at Night of Champions this Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Fans still discuss the turn of events that led to CM Punk’s exit from AEW
Pro wrestling fans continue to discuss the incident that led to CM Punk’s departure from AEW. Recently, a fan on X (Twitter) suggested that AEW President Tony Khan would never allow The Second City Saint to return, regardless of the circumstances.
In response to this tweet, well-known journalist Dave Meltzer shared his opinion, stating that while Khan could potentially bring Punk back if he apologized to him and “other key people,” he also added that such a scenario is unlikely to occur.
“This isn’t going to happen but if Punk came to Tony and apologized to him and the other key people, he’d take him back in a heartbeat. But it’s not worth debating because it both can’t happen and won’t.”
