Vijender Singh to fight on top of a ship in his next boxing bout in Goa
The boxer is set to return to action after more than a year.
Vijender Singh will be fighting his next boxing bout on March 19 on the rooftop deck of a ship in Goa. The opponent who will face the Indian professional boxer is yet to be announced. This will be Vijender’s first boxing match since November 2019.
His last bout came against Ghana’s Charles Adamu in Dubai who is also the former Commonwealth Champion. The Indian is the current holder of the WBO Oriental and WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight championships.
In a piece by The Times of India, the promoters of the boxer, IOS Boxing Promotions’ statement read that, "The first-of-its-kind fight will be held on the rooftop deck of the Majestic Pride Casino Ship - who have been roped in as the venue partner.”
"The bout goes beyond the traditional norms of a regular professional match and offers viewers the glitz and glamour of Vegas-style boxing. The announcement of Vijender's opponent will be made soon." the statement further read.
Neerav Tomar from IOS Boxing Promotions further added, "A boxing match on a ship is the perfect amalgamation of the intensity of boxing and razzmatazz of the entertaining casino. We hope all the fans watching or present at the venue will thoroughly enjoy the event.”
The 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medallist, Vijender Singh also expressed his views ahead of the sensational boxing match which is eagerly awaited by his fans. He said that, "It is something that has never happened before in India and I am glad to be part of this unique professional match. I am pumped up and eager as ever to enter the ring again and have been training hard to keep myself fit for the bout.”
Singh has been practicing with boxers from Bhiwani of late, trying to keep his skills sharp and fitness on point. The boxer will hope to continue his undefeated streak, which stands at 12-0 at the moment. The upcoming match will be his fifth professional bout in India.
In a recent interview with Times of India, Vijender gave an insight into his training and how he has been keeping fit. He was quoted as saying, “I was doing fitness drills during the lockdown as well, but the feeling of the ring is different. We may do as much cardio, weights, etc.; but sparring is different, the feel is different. I am currently sparring with boxers from the boxing academy in Jhajjar and Faridabad, sometimes boxers from Bhiwani as well.”
