The Hangzhou Asian Games, also known as the Asiad is all set to unveil its 19th edition. The venue for the Asiad is China’s silk city Hangzhou. It will be the third time that China is hosting the continental games having hosted it twice in 1990 and 2010. The hosts are the most successful nation at the Asian Games having won more than 300 medals.
Asian Games is considered to be the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games alongside other Continental events. This year the competition will host 61 disciplines in 40 sports. The quadrennial extravaganza will host approximately 12,500 athletes from 45 countries making it the biggest Asian Games ever.
This year will mark the debut of E-Sports and breakdancing in an effort to attract the interest of the young generation. It is considered to be an historic move by organizers to include the above mentioned events.
The 19th Asian Games will kick off its proceedings with an opening ceremony on September 23rd in Hangzhou, China. The opening ceremony will be staged at China’s iconic Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium which is also famously known as the Big Lotus.
The stadium which is a state-of-the-art facility was originally constructed as a football stadium and has now been converted into a full swing Olympic sports centre which can cater about 80,000 people at once.
