Mayank Chaphekar became the first Indian athlete to participate in Modern Pentathlon at the Asiad.

The Asian Games 2023 will be officially hosted in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8 after the opening ceremony. The quadrennial event includes 40 sports and 406 events, attracting over 10,000 athletes from 45 countries affiliated with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). However, action in some sports like football, cricket, volleyball has already commenced from 19th September.

On Wednesday, the Indian rowing contingent had a great day with every rower either advancing to the finals or semis or repechage rounds. Modern Pentathlon made its debut in the Games with Mayank Chaphekar becoming the first athlete to represent India in the sport at Asian Games. Later, Indian men's volleyball team created history after a stunning win over Asian giants South Korea.

Rowing

  • Kiran, Anshika Bharti – Women lightweight double scull qualifies for repechage.
  • Arjun Lal Jat, Arvind Singh – Men lightweight double scull qualifies for repechage.
  • Parminder Singh, Satnam Singh – Men double scull qualifies for repechage.
  • Aswathi PB, Mrunamayee Nilesh S, Thangjam Priya Devi, Rukmani – Women coxless four qualifies for finals.
  • Babu Lal Yadav, Lekh Ram – Men coxless pair qualifies for finals.
  • Charanjeet Singh, DU Pande, Naresh Kalwaniya, Neeraj, Neetesh Kumar, Ashish, Bheem Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Punit Kumar – Men coxed eight qualifies for finals.

Moder Pentathlon

Mayank Chaphekar finished the fencing ranking round on 28th position out of 29 competitors with 166 points (8 victories and 20 defeats) in Modern Pentathlon.

Volleyball

The Indian men's volleyball team upset three-time champions South Korea. India defeated the reigning silver medallists by 3-2 pulling off one of the biggest upsets in its history. Ranked 73rd in the FIVB rankings, India took the fight to the World No. 27 South Korea despite losing the first set in a closely contested game (25-27).

They made a comeback in the second set by winning it 28-26. India's best came in the third set which they won by 25-22. Korea took the fourth game 25-20. The last set was very closely fought, with both teams tied at different stages of the set (4-4, 8-8 and 12-12). India also couldn't capitalize on the first two match points, but eventually took the set 17-15 to defeated Asia's fourth-ranked side 3-2 and top Pool C with five points.
