India have previously played China in the Asian Games.

India will face off against hosts China in their opening clash of the 19th Asian Games come September 19. The Blue Tigers will have no time to train given their complex travel schedule ahead of their opener.

India come into the tie on the back of a disappointing King’s Cup campaign in Thailand where they lost to continental Giants Iraq in the semi-final and then Lebanon in the third-place playoff as they ended up finishing fourth.

Ahead of the game against China, we take a look at the head-to-head record between the two teams.

Historical significance

The first game between India and China dates back to 1974 where China handed India a shameful defeat at the very same tournament in Tehran. China scored seven past India while India managed to get back only one. The fixture holds a lot of importance given the kind of history that both the nations share across all aspects.

The upcoming game between the two sides will be the first one in five years as the last game was played back in 2018 in China. The stakes are very high and both sides will need to fire on all cylinders.

China ahead on H2H records

China have a fine lead against India in the head-to-head record. The Dragons have a huge margin having won eight games out of 15 against the Blue Tigers. India have never won against their neighbours, but have denied them a win five times with a draw.

The last meeting between the two sides took place in 2018 just before the AFC Asian Cup and India put up a strong fight back then. The Blue Tigers restricted China from scoring past them and did trouble with a few attacking moves.

What’s done is done. It will be a fresh day with new possibilities and India must make the most out of it. They should not let China’s better H2H record overpower their spirits and should perform at the peak of their powers.

The Asian Games opener

India have made it to the Asian Games after a lot of chaos in the background. It wasn’t easy, but they have finally made it and now they must make it count. India’s chances of making it to the next round depends heavily on this fixture.

Whichever team gets a strong start will set the tone for the rest of the tournament. So, both the teams will have to be at their absolute best come Tuesday. Igor Stimac has a point to prove after all that has happened to him and he must deliver.
