The 2023 Asian Games set to start on September 23

Since the first Asian Games, held in Delhi, India, in 1951, Japan have participated in every Asian Games. The nation's involvement in the Asian Games is organised by the Japanese Olympic Committee, often known as the National Olympic Committee of Japan.

It also happens to be the earliest Asian National Olympic Committee. The body was founded in 1911 and recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1912.

Being the sole nation in Asian sports to have won a minimum of 20 gold medals at each Asian Games, Japan has a notable record.

A football competition was held at the first Asian Games.

The minimum age for the male squads has been under 23 plus a maximum of three overage players for each group since the 2002 Asian Games, which is also the age restriction for the Summer Olympics' football competitions.

Despite belonging to the Olympic Council of Asia, Kazakhstan is unable to play football because its national football association, the KFF, has been a member of UEFA since 2002. The same restriction governs Australia and Guam, both of which are members of the Oceania National Olympic Committees but not AFC members.

Only Japan has ever won both the Men's and Women's Gold Medals at a single Asian Games (2010).
