19th edition of the competition has a record number of Indian participation
Close to 28 Indians/team have secured their entry for the World Athletics Championships 2023 scheduled to be held in Budapest, Hungary from 19 to 27. The Road to Budapest Rankings was updated on Wednesday (July 2nd) on the World Athletics website with the final update on the list made accordingly. The last date for qualification to the World’s was July 31st and this time India has good number contingent at the World’s compared to the last edition in Eugene (23).
Four men’s Javelin throwers got selected to the competition with Neeraj Chopra securing his quota by winning the Diamond League last year. With the Olympic champion receiving a direct entry, India had the opportunity of sneaking in three more athletes in the event and eventually, Rohit Yadav, DP Manu, and Kishore Kumar Jena made it through via the World Rankings. A total of 36 Javelin throwers are selected and Kishore occupied the 36th spot jumping three spots from last weeks rankings – after a PB throw at Sri Lanka National Athletics Championships.
Of the 28 member contingent, only nine got through via the Entry standard route with the rest qualifying through world rankings. Last year, Neeraj Chopra was the only Indian to secure a medal (silver) and overall India has only two medalists at the prestigious competition. This time with good squad, India has the opportunity to secure its first historic gold.
