The 19th edition of the Asian Games held its track and field competitions at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium which commenced on September 29th and wrapped up with the marathon events on October 5, 2023.
Indian athletics team consisted of 68 members participating in 37 different events at the quadrennial extravaganza held in Hangzhou, China. They had a highly successful campaign at Hangzhou 2023 amassing a total of 29 medals which included six gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze. This is a substantial progress as it is nine better than Jakarta.
Hence, athletics emerged as the most successful sport for India. India's gold medalists included Neeraj Chopra (men's javelin throw), Annu Rani (women's javelin throw), Tajinderpal Singh Toor (men's shot put), Avinash Sable (men's 3000m steeplechase), Parul Chaudhary (women's 5000m) and the quartet of Muhammad Anas, Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh (men's 4x400m relay),each of them gracing the podium as victorious champions.
The national records were rewritten by Tejaswin Shankar in the men's decathlon and the mixed 4x400m relay team which comprised of Muhammad Ajmal, Vithya Ramraj, Rajesh Ramesh and Subha Venkatesan. Furthermore, in a moment reminiscent of the legendary PT Usha's era, Vithya Ramraj achieved a feat by equaling Usha's national record in the women's 400m hurdles, a record that had stood for nearly four decades.
Kishore Jena's outstanding performance in the men's javelin throw where he secured a silver medal not only earned him a podium spot but also met the qualification standards for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Harmilan Bains, Parul Chaudhary and Avinash Sable made news by clinching two individual medals each during the competition.
On the other hand, Vithya Ramraj played a significant role in three distinct medal presentations as she secured bronze medal in the women's 400m hurdles and silver medals in the mixed 4x400m relay and the women's 4x400m relay.
