The landscape of Indian athletics has been dramatically transformed, particularly in the field of javelin throw, following Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold-medal win at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. This victory not only propelled the sport into the national spotlight but also inspired a new generation of athletes, leading to a surge in participation across the country.

Chopra’s success has instilled a belief among Indian athletes that they can compete and excel on the global stage. Since then, there has been a significant increase in investment in facilities, coaching, and talent development in javelin throw. Consequently, India is emerging as a formidable contender in this event, with athletes like Kishore Jena, DP Manu, Annu Rani, and others following in Chopra’s footsteps.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the top five throws by Indian female javelin throwers in 2023, a testament to the growing presence of India in this field.

Karishma Sanil (Distance – 52.86 m)

Emerging talent Karishma Sanil has earned a place in the list of top five javelin throws by Indian javelin throwers for the year 2023. Karishma achieved this feat at the 62nd National Open Athletics Championship held in Bengaluru. With a throw of 52.86 meters, Karishma stood on the top of the podium as she bagged the silver medal in the competition.

Besides this, Karishma Sanil’s other huge achievement is clinching the gold medal in the women’s javelin throw event at the 2nd Indian Open Throws competition which took place in Bellary. Hailing from Barkur, an area located in the Brahmavara taluk, Udupi district of Karnataka state, she won the gold medal with a throw of 47.60m.

Jyoti (Distance – 53.59 m)

Haryana athlete Jyoti made it to the list of top five javelin throws by Indian javelin throwers in 2023 with a best effort of 53.59 m. With this, she collected the gold medal in the women’s javelin throw event at the National Open Athletics Championships 2023 in Bengaluru. Previously, she rose to fame, setting a national record with a 41.24 m throw in the girl’s U-16 category at the 33rd National Junior Athletics Championships in 2017.

Priyanka Rani (Distance – 53.75 m)

Priyanka Rani made her mark at the 37th National Games in Goa, securing the silver medal in the women’s javelin throw event with a throw of 53.75m. Despite stiff competition, she held her own, earning a place among the top Indian female javelin throwers of 2023.

Shilpa Rani (Distance – 54.82 m)

Shilpa Rani, recognized as one of India’s top female javelin throwers, holds the second-best record among Indian female javelin throwers in the sport in 2023. In the 37th National Games 2023, she delivered an outstanding performance as she claimed the gold medal in the women’s javelin throw with a remarkable throw of 54.82 meters.

Previously, Shilpa represented India at the Commonwealth Games 2022, where she achieved a seventh-place finish with a throw of 54.62 meters, missing a spot on the podium. The seasoned Indian athlete boasts a personal best throw of 59.01 meters, achieved at the National Inter-State Championships in Chennai in 2022.

Annu Rani (Distance – 62.92 m)

India’s national record holder javelin thrower, Annu Rani, clinched the gold medal in the women’s javelin throw at the Asian Games 2023. By throwing the spear to an impressive 62.92m, also her season’s best, Annu became the first Indian woman to win a gold in the history of the Games.

She surprised everyone with her performance, as she had not surpassed the 60m mark in her last seven competitions. This was the first gold medal by an Indian female javelin thrower, thus making it a historic occasion for the nation and a personal achievement for Annu. Prior to this, she has won bronze medal each at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Athletics Championships.
