Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2024 Day 3: Harshit Kumar clinches gold in men's hammer throw, Laxita Vinod bags silver in women's 800m

The third day of the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2024 in Dubai concluded with India’s Harshit Kumar securing the prestigious men’s hammer throw gold. Adding to the victory, Laxita Vinod Sandilea claimed the silver medal in the women’s 800m event while the 4x400m mixed relay team earned their well-deserved place on the podium with a silver medal win. Shreeya Rajesh also clinched a bronze medal in women’s 400m hurdles with a timing of 59.20 secs.

Other highlights of the day, include the men’s 4x100m relay team placed second in its heats with a timing of 40.43s to advance to the final. Additionally, Sabita Toppo and Unnathi Aiyappa Bolland progressed to the women’s 100m hurdles final with a performance of 14.10s and 13.72s respectively.
Laxita, the reigning under-20 Asian champion in 1500m experienced a fierce competition against Japan’s Nishida Yuri and ultimately secured the silver medal with a time of 2:07.10s thereby surpassing her personal record by over a second. Her previous best was 2:08.24s. Meanwhile, Tanvi Malik, the other Indian in the final finished in sixth place with a time of 2:13.42.
In the men’s hammer throw event, Harshit covered a distance of 66.70m for gold while felow Indian, Prateek secured bronze with a throw of 65.97m.

The Indian team, featuring P. Abiram, Kanista Teena, Navpreet Singh and Sandramol Sabu secured the silver medal in the mixed relay event with a time of 3:24.86 and finished behind China.
Shreeya Rajesh claimed the bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 59.20s while teammate Jeyavindhiya Jegadish placed sixth with a time of 1:02.06s.
After raising the expectations with four gold-medal finish in Day 2, Friday brought a touch of disappointment. Sachin was placed fourth in the men’s 10,000m race walk with a time of 45:50.56s, while the other Indian participant, Himanshu faced disqualification.
In the women’s hammer throw event, Nadini and Anushka of India secured fifth and sixth places respectively with a performance of 56.99m and 55.81m.
