Indian runner Jyothi Yarraji finished fourth with a timing of 23.57 seconds in the women’s 200m event at the Canarias Athletics Invitational on Wednesday (May 15).

The Canarias Athletics Invitational is a bronze-level meet in Spain where several Indian athletes took part to secure a spot at the Paris Olympics or to gain momentum ahead of the sporting megafest.

Spain’s Lucía Carrillo finished third with slightly better timing than Jyothi Yarraji at 23.39 seconds. However, Esperança Cladera recorded the victory with 23.26 seconds.

Last week, the 25-year-old won the women’s 100-meter hurdles event at the Harry Schulting Games 2024 athletics meet in Vught, Netherlands. Jyothi Yarraji clocked a timing of 12.87s for the gold medal at the meet. However, the Indian track and field star failed to cross the Olympic qualification mark by one-tenth of a second. The qualification standard for the Paris Olympics for the women’s 100-meter hurdles event is 12.77s.

The Asian Games silver medalist reached close to qualifying for the Olympics during the World University Games in Chengdu too. She clocked an impressive timing of 12.78s for a bronze medal. However, the qualification period for the upcoming Olympics will end on June 30.

India’s Amlan Borgohain also took part at the Canarias Athletics Invitational in the men’s 200m event. However, Borgohain finished last, with a difference of almost two seconds from the winner. He completed the race in 22.28 seconds.
