Sarvesh Kushare was also the first Indian to qualify for the men’s jump final.

After a challenging start to the World Athletics Championships 2025, India finally saw hope for a medal on Day 2.

Two athletes, high jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare and long-distance runner Gulveer Singh, represented the nation in Tokyo on September 14, Monday. Check India’s result on the second day below.

Sarvesh Kushare, national record holder in men’s high jump, started with a foul at 2.16m in his first attempt. However, he quickly recovered on his second attempt, clearing the qualification mark.

Next challenges was passing the automatic qualifying height of 2.26m, where only top 12 athletes would advance to the final.

Kushare whose career best jump stands at 2.27m, cleared 2.25m on his second attempt, matching the top mark along with the other 12 athletes.

With that jump, Sarvesh Kushare scripted history. He became the first Indian-ever to qualify for the men’s high jump final at the World Athletics Championships. The final will take place on September 16.

Meanwhile, the Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh, who holds the national record in 3000m, 5,000m, and 10,000m events, was in action in the men’s 10,000m event.

Singh stayed close to the leading pack in the early stages but gradually slipped behind. He was running behind the top 10 at the 3km mark.

Eventually, he finished 16th in the final with a time of 29:13.33, nearly two minutes slower than his personal best of 27:00.02.

That event marked the end of Day 2 for Indian contingent. Now, India’s hopes shift to the upcoming events on Day 3 where the medal prospects rest with Parul Chaudhary and Ankita in the women’s 3000m steeplechase heats, Murali Sreeshankar in men’s long jump qualification, and Tejas Shirse in the men’s 110m hurdles heats.
