Mondo Duplantis only needed three attempts to win men’s pole vault title in Diamond League Finals 2024.

Pole vault superstar Mondo Duplantis set a meeting record in the Diamond League Finals 2024. The record was set during the first day of Allianz Memorial van Damme in Brussels on Friday.

Duplantis, who set a world record of 6.25m to win Olympic gold in Paris and then increased that to 6.26m in Silesia last month, kept his jumping to a minimum this evening, no doubt due to the chilly conditions. He only needed three attempts to take a hefty lead over his rivals.

He opened with 5.62m and didn’t vault again until the bar was at 5.92m, once again going clear on his first try. No other vaulter managed to clear that height successfully, so Duplantis then raised the bar to 6.11m, one centimetre higher than the meeting record he set last year.

With what was his third jump of the night, the Swede sailed cleanly over 6.11m to secure yet another Diamond trophy. He had set the meeting record of 6.10m on September 8, 2023.

The 24 year old was previously seen during the Zurich Diamond League 2024 during an exhibition 100m race against Karsten Warholm. Duplantis recorded a personal best of 10.37 seconds to beat Warholm in a highly anticipated race. It was the perfect season ending competetion for Duplantis.

“My legs felt terrible tonight and I’m just really tired,” said Duplantis. “It’s been a crazy couple of weeks: the race against Karsten and then I had to jump the day after. That took a lot more from my body than I expected. With 6.11m I got a good result, but the world record wasn’t meant to be tonight.” Duplantis broke one of the youngest meeting records.

Emmanouil Karalis came in second with a best attempt of 5.82m and could not soar past 5.92m. Ben Broeders of Belgium registered a season best of 5.82m to finish joint third with American Sam Kendricks. Thibaut Collet and Christopher Nilsen were joint fifth with an attempt of 5.62m. KC Lightfoot ended up seventh by clearing 5.62m. He had set the area record of 6.07m in June 2, 2023 but this time could not breach thr 6m mark.
