The 26-year-old, Neeraj Chopra, finished with a best attempt of 87.86 metres.
Defending world champion Neeraj Chopra finished at runner-up at the Diamond League Finals 2024 on September 15 in Brussels, Belgium. Chopra’s best attempt on the night was 87.86 meters, just 1cm shy of Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who threw 87.87 meters to win the men’s javelin throw competition.
Chopra, who was playing his last competition of the season, looked far from best but nonetheless continued his excellent run of finishing in the top three of every event since 2018. He had last finished outside the top three at Golden Spike Ostrava 2018 when he finished sixth.
The two-time Olympic medallist put up a strong fight despite dealing with a nagging groin injury. Neeraj, 26, started well, throwing 86.82 meters in his first try, which put him in second place right away. The drama unfolded in the third round of throws, when Chopra launched his best throw of 87.86 meters, falling just short by a mere centimetre of Peters’ mark. Julian Weber from Germany came in third with a throw of 85.97 meters.
Throughout the competition, Chopra showed why he’s one of the best in the world. He managed to throw over 83 meters multiple times, proving he can perform well even when not fully fit. His coach, Dr. Klaus, was seen giving him advice between throws, especially about his technique.

Chopra had some trouble with his footing in his later attempts. He fell to his left side a couple of times after throwing, but this didn’t stop him from keeping his second-place spot.
This result keeps up Chopra’s impressive run of finishing in the top three in every event he’s been in since September 2018. It’s a good end to his 2024 season, where he’s consistently thrown over 85 meters despite his injury problems.
Chopra’s 2024 season highlight has been marked by 1-2 position. The Indian Javelin sensation clinched silver at Paris Olympics, won the Pavo Nurmi Games, finished second in the Doha and Lausanne legs of the Diamond League and ended his season with second place in Diamond League finals.
