Hima Das to be appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Assam Police

The 20-year-old athlete has been out of the tracks for a while due to injury.

'Dhing express' Hima Das will be appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Assam Police (DSP). State’s finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made this announcement in the assembly.

Assam government also announced that the Asian Games and Olympic Medal winners from the state will be offered ACS or APS Ranks.

Sarma tweeted, “Our government is pleased to announce Ms Hima Das, our own ‘Dhing Express’, as the first recipient of this policy. She will be offered the position of Deputy Superintendent of Police.”

During the budget session, Sarma announced, “Those sports persons from Assam who have won gold medals in Olympic, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will be appointed as the grade one officer of the Assam Government.”

“We are happy to announce that ‘Dhing Express’ Hima Das will be the first beneficiary of this initiative. She will be offered the post of DSP.”

Reacting to the news, Hima Das took to twitter and expressed her gratitude for this recognition.

She tweeted, "I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonwal sir and the honourable finance minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma sir for having offering me the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police in recognition of my achievements and motivating me and countless budding sportspersons to strive for medal-winning performance."

“Today, I reaffirm my commitment to push my limits and excel in the upcoming Games and bring laurel to Assam and Bharat.”

Rajasthan Police had named a stadium after Hima Das a week ago. She posted a photo on twitter and thanked the state’s Police. She said, “Honoured to have a stadium named after me. Thank you Rajasthan Police. I'm truly humbled by this kind gesture.”

Hima Das came to the limelight a few years ago when she became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships. She is also the national record holder in 400 meters.

She created the national record with a timing of 50.79 seconds at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Currently, she is preparing to qualify for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

The state’s finance minister also announced that a sum of Rs 1000 Crore will be given for ‘Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Yojana’. With this Yojna, the state government is expecting to engage the youth in different economic activities.
