The young athlete will now train at a sports centre to hone her skills.

Jharkhand's Chief Minister Hemant Soren came forward to lend monetary support to young athlete Geeta Kumari, who used to sell vegetables on the streets of Ramgarh district to make ends meet.

The coronavirus situation has already affected the lives of millions of people and athletes in India are also facing various problems due to the pandemic.

Hemant Soren came to know about the situation of Geeta Kumari through Twitter and immediately told the Ramgarh Deputy Commissioner (DC) to provide her financial support, so she can focus on her career as an athlete.

The Ramgarh Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sandeep Singh gave a cheque of Rs 50,000 to Kumari on Monday and also announced Rs 3,000 monthly stipend to the athlete and arranged for her training at a sports centre.

Inspired to become a world-class athlete, Geeta Kumari won eight gold medals at state-level walking competitions as well as a silver and bronze medal in competitions held in Kolkata. In a release, the Ramgarh Deputy Commissioner wished the athlete all the success in the world of sports and said, "There are several sportspersons in Ramgarh who are capable of winning laurels for the country and the administration will ensure they get support."

Geeta Kumari is also a final year BA student at the Ananda College in Hazaribag, which is near Ramgarh. Her family is economically poor, but now with the support of the administration, she is motivated to win laurels for the country.
