India’s Jyothi Yarraji clocked a time of 13.17 seconds in the repechage round of the Paris Olympics 2024.
Jyothi Yarraji from India participated in the first repechage heat of the women’s 100m hurdles in Lane 8. She had earlier completed her heat on Wednesday in seventh place with a time of 13.16 seconds, which placed her 35th out of 40 participants.
Repechage is a new feature in the Olympics that gives athletes who didn’t qualify in the heats a second chance. In the repechage round, times are not considered, instead, the first two athletes to cross the finish line advance to the semi-finals.
This addition to the Olympics has proven to be quite beneficial and allows athletes like Jyothi Yarraji to gain valuable experience and improve their timing. By competing in the repechage against top global athletes, Jyothi has the opportunity to enhance her performance through these high-level races.
In the women’s 100m hurdles repechage, the competition was fierce, with the top three athletes in Heat 1 finishing close together. Marione Fourie from South Africa led with a time of 12.79 seconds, followed by Maayke Tjin-A-Lim of the Netherlands at 12.87 seconds and V. Forster from Slovakia at 12.88 seconds.
Jyothi Yarraji of India, who had previously recorded a time of 13.16 seconds in her initial heat, struggled to keep pace in this high-stakes race. Despite her efforts, she finished with a time of 13.17 seconds, placing her fourth in the repechage.
Unfortunately, this result means Jyothi’s Olympic campaign has ended as she did not qualify for the semi-finals. Jyothi Yarraji, who holds the Indian record with a time of 12.78 seconds, would have qualified had she been able to replicate that performance in today’s repechage heats.

Among the three repechage heats for the women’s 100m hurdles, Jyothi Yarraji’s race turned out to be the fastest. In Repechage Heat 3, Lotta Harala of Finland qualified with a time of 12.86 seconds, Yumi Tanaka of Japan followed at 12.89 seconds and Luca Kozák of Hungary was just behind at 12.96 seconds.
In Repechage-Heat 2, Ebony Morrison of Liberia and Maribel Caicedo of Ecuador both secured qualification with times of 12.82 and 12.83 seconds respectively, while R. Hurske of Finland also qualified with a time of 12.83 seconds.
The performance was consistently impressive with all qualifying athletes clocking sub-13-second times. This standard of competition highlights the intense level of speed we can anticipate in the upcoming semi-finals and finals.
