Tejaswin Shankar became the first Indian to cross 7,800 points in the decathlon.

Tejaswin Shankar set a new Indian national record in men’s decathlon at the Wiesław Czapiewski Memorial in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on July 27. He registered a total of 7,826 points, surpassing his previous record of 7,666 points set during the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

This marked the first time an Indian decathlete has crossed the 7,800-point mark. Shankar finished fourth overall in the competition, which is part of the World Athletics Combined Events Tour (Gold level). The event was won by the Czech Republic’s Ondrej Kopecky with 8,254 points, followed by compatriot Vilem Strasky (8,136) and Estonia’s Risto Lillemets (8,107).

The Indian athlete delivered consistent performances across the ten events in just two days. On Day 1, he clocked 11.02 seconds in the 100m, jumped 7.57m in long jump, threw 12.62m in shot put, cleared 2.18m in high jump, and completed the 400m in 48.87 seconds. His Day 1 total stood at 4,292 points, the highest among all athletes at the end of the first day.

On the second day, he ran the 110m hurdles in 14.63 seconds, threw the discus 38.28m, cleared 4.10m in pole vault, managed 52.89m in javelin, and clocked 4:31.80 in the 1500m run. His overall tally of 7,826 points came through three personal bests (100m, 1500m, pole vault) and three season bests (long jump, 400m, discus).

Shankar had earlier won silver in the decathlon at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. His transition from high jump—where he still holds the national record of 2.29m—to the decathlon began in 2022. This is the second time he has broken the national record in the discipline.

With this performance, Shankar currently leads the Asian rankings for the 2025 season in men’s decathlon.
