Gulveer Singh breaks 16-year-old national record in men's 10,000m with second place finish in California
Despite his feat, Gulveer Singh fell short of the Paris Olympics qualifying mark.
Indian runner Gulveer Singh shattered the national record in the men’s 10,000m at The Ten 2024 athletics meet in California. His time of 27:41.81 was over 20 seconds faster than the previous record, which had stood for 16 years. Despite this impressive feat, Singh fell short of the qualifying mark for the Paris Olympics 2024 by 41 seconds.
At The Ten 2024 athletics meet held in San Juan Capistrano, California on Sunday. Gulveer finished second to American Drew Hunter (27:38.87).
The previous national record of 28:02.89, set by Surendra Singh in 2008 was eclipsed by Gulveer by over 20 seconds. Incidentally, Surendra is Gulveer’s coach. This impressive time also places him 37th among Asian runners. Gulveer Singh is the only Indian athlete to make the top 100 list in this discipline based on timings.
The other Indian athletes who participated in the competition also fared decently at The Ten 2024 athletics meet with several runners setting personal bests.
Kartik Kumar, the Asian Games silver medalist, clocked a new personal best of 28:01.90, which is also faster than the previous national record, in the men’s 10,000m race.

Meanwhile, Avinash Sable, the Asian Games gold medalist in the 3000m steeplechase, did not finish the men’s 10,000m race and pulled out in the 15th lap.
In the women’s 10,000m race, Parul Chaudhary finished 20th but achieved a new personal best timing of 32:02.08. Despite the improvement, she fell short of the Paris Olympics qualifying standard.
Three other Indian women also achieved personal bests in a different women’s 10,000m race. Seema secured third place at 32:07.67, while Sanjivani Jadhav and Ankita finished fourth and eighth, respectively, with timings of 32:21.76 and 32:48.71.
