The Asian Champion looks to extend strong start to 2024 season.
Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medallist, Abdulla Aboobacker, will reportedly be India’s only representative in the upcoming Xiamen Diamond League 2024, which will take place in Xiamen, China on April 20. This event will also kickstart the Diamond League season 2024.
The 28-year-old Aboobacker, who won men’s triple jump gold at the Asian Athletics Championships last year, started his 2024 season with a win at the Indian Open Jumps Competition 2024 in Bengaluru.
In the event, Abdulla Aboobacker, the current Asian champion, and Commonwealth Games silver medalist, emerged victorious with a jump of 16.76 meters.
Eldhose Paul clinched the silver medal with a final jump measuring 16.45 meters. Prabhu Selva secured the bronze with a leap of 16.32 meters.
The Diamond League is a yearly event where top track and field athletes compete in 15 major meets. It’s considered one of the highest-level series of one-day sports events organized by World Athletics, the main body for track and field sports. The season will kick off with a big event in Xiamen, which had its first big meet in September 2023.
Each event will happen 4 to 8 times during the season. The grand finale in Brussels is special because it’s the only event where every type of competition will take place.
In 2024, top athletes from around the world will compete in a major track and field series. They’ll participate in 15 events spread across four continents.
Here’s what’s on the agenda:
For the men: sprints and middle-distance runs (100m, 800m, 3000m/5000m), hurdles (110m), and field events like High Jump, Pole Vault, and Triple Jump.
For the women: sprints (200m, 400m), middle-distance (1500m), steeplechase (3000m SC), hurdles (100m), and throwing events (Shot Put, Discus).
