Pramod Bhagat will eye on the record 6th world championship title

The BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2024 is a bi-annual event that showcases the best para-badminton players in the world. They compete in six sports classes and five categories, depending on their type and level of impairment. The championships were formerly run by the Para Badminton World Federation (PBWF) until it merged with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in June 2011.

The 14th edition of the tournament will take place in Pattaya, Thailand from February 20 to 25, 2024. India will be hoping to repeat or surpass its stellar performance in the last edition, where it topped the medal table with 15.5 medals (2 Gold, 2 Silver, 11.5 Bronze). India dominated the men’s SL 3 category, winning all three medals, with Pramod Bhagat clinching the gold. India also had a gold medalist in the women’s SU 5 category, Manisha Ramadas, who beat the defending champion from China.

Classes at the World Championships

There are 6 categories across 5 disciplines. These 5 are

SL 3 – Players have impairment in one or both lower limbs and poor walking/running balance

SL 4 – Players have impairment in one or both lower limbs and minimal impairment in walking/running balance

SU 5 – Players have impairment of the upper limbs.

SH 6 – Players in this class have short stature

WH 1 – Players in this class are those who have impairment in both lower limbs and trunk function and require a wheelchair to play

WH 2 – Players have impairment in one or both lower limbs and minimal or no impairment of the trunk and also require a wheelchair

India at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2024

India will be sending a strong 51 contingent. The eyes will be on the Paralympic Champions Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar to do well and also Paralympic Medalist, Suhas Yathiraj, and Manoj Sarkar. In the women’s section, the eyes will be on the young sensation Thulaisimathi, Manisha, and Palak Kohli.
