Carolina Marin won her second All England title.

Carolina Marín, Spain’s badminton icon, and three-time World Champion, experienced a moment of profound emotion as she secured her second All England Open title. The victory was made all the more poignant by the presence of her mother in the crowd.

Marín’s journey to the title was not without its challenges. In the final against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, Marín was pushed to the brink in a tightly contested opening game. Despite Yamaguchi’s valiant efforts, which saw her take a late lead, Marín’s tenacity shone through as she overturned game points against her to secure the game 26-24.

The second game commenced with Marín in the lead, but it soon became evident that Yamaguchi was grappling with a physical ailment, later identified as a right hip issue. After a brief attempt to continue, Yamaguchi retired from the match, conceding victory to Marín at 11-1.

The realization of victory was delayed for Marín, who was engrossed in a discussion with her coach. When the news finally sank in, she was visibly moved, shedding tears of joy and sinking to her knees.

Marin made a remarkable comeback from a career-threatening knee injury. The presence of her mother in the stands added a layer of sentimentality to the occasion after the loss of her father three years ago, her mother missed witnessing Marín’s first All-England victory in 2015.

She said, “As many people know, I lost my Dad two to three years ago, I have only her. I have won the All England, my Mom wasn’t there for the first time, and my mom has come, to celebrate and to have her for the whole week was special.”

Marín’s achievement at the All England Open adds to her illustrious career, which includes multiple World Championships and the distinction of being the first non-Asian woman to win a badminton singles Olympic gold.
