The gold medalist of the women's singles in the 2019 edition played through an injury in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games women's singles gold medalist PV Sindhu confirmed that she will be missing the 2022 Badminton World Championships because of a ‘stress fracture’. She confirmed the news through her social media.

In the build-up to the World Championship, PV Sindhu was one of India’s best shots at winning the title. The 2019 gold medalist defeated Michelle Li of Canada 21-15, 21-13 in the women’s singles finals of the Birmingham Games. In a statement that she posted on her various social media handles, she said-

“While I am on the high of winning a gold medal at the CWG for India. Unfortunately, I have to pull out of the world championships. I felt pain and there was an injury scare at the quarter-finals of the CWG, but with the help of my coach, physio and trainer, I decided to push as far as I could," Sindhu said in the social media post.

“The pain was unbearable during and after the finals. Hence I rushed for an MRI as soon as I got back to Hyderabad. The doctors confirmed a stress fracture on my left foot and recommended rest for a few weeks. I should be back to training in a few weeks. Thank you all for your support and love," she added.

The 27-year-old shuttler revealed in her statement that she was playing at the Games in Birmingham in spite of the pain. PV Sindhu braved through her pain and went on to clinch the gold medal, which was her second in total at the Games in all the editions that she has featured in. Sindhu had won a gold in the last edition in 2018 in the mixed team event. Her absence will surely be a big jolt to the Indian fans.

The World Championships will be held in the city of Tokyo, Japan from August 21 to August 28.
