The Malaysian duo secured a historic fifth BWF World Tour Finals appearance.

Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair and Olympic bronze medalists, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, have secured a place in the highly anticipated BWF World Tour Finals 2024, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from December 11–15. The tournament will feature the top eight players or pairs in the World Tour Rankings for each category, competing for the crown.

The China Masters 2024, a Super 750 event, was one of the last two tournaments leading up to the Finals, where the list of players making the cut will be finalized.

Chia and Soh’s achievement marks their fifth overall qualification for the prestigious season-ending tournament and their third consecutive appearance since 2022. They join compatriots Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, who also secured a spot in the Finals.

The 2022 World Champions have established a legacy as Malaysia’s most consistent representatives in the BWF World Tour Finals, having qualified in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, and now 2024.

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik’s journey to BWF World Tour Finals 2024

The road to Hangzhou wasn’t without its challenges. Chia and Soh faced a tough test at the China Masters 2024, where they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by China’s He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu after a hard-fought match (25-23, 17-21, 21-12). Reflecting on the loss, Aaron Chia said, “I think we lost mainly due to the first set, especially the critical points. It was the same situation as when we faced them at this event last year.”

Despite the setback, their hopes remained alive but hinged on the performance of other top contenders, such as Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi, who needed to fall short.

Fortunately for the Malaysians, the results went their way. Hoki and Kobayashi failed to advance further in the China Masters. With their defeat, Gutama/Isfahani and Chia/Soh have secured the last two men’s doubles spots at the World Tour Finals.

The pair will aim for redemption

In their previous outing at the BWF World Tour Finals 2023, Chia and Soh were eliminated during the group stage. This year, they will aim to go further and finally add a World Tour Finals medal to their impressive list of achievements.

As they gear up for their fifth appearance in the season-ending tournament, the reigning World Championships and Olympic bronze medalists carry the hopes of Malaysian badminton fans, eager to see them finish the year on a high note.
