Former World Champion Loh Kean Yew Showcases Singapore’s Strongest Hopes

The BWF World Tour Finals 2024 are set to take place from December 11 to 15 in Hangzhou, China, featuring a prize pool of USD 2.5 million. This highly prestigious badminton tournament brings together the top eight ranked players and pairs in each category based on the BWF World Tour rankings. Notably, each country can have a maximum of two players or pairs qualify per category.

The path to the BWF World Tour Finals is a gruelling one, requiring players to maintain a high level of performance across a series of top-tier tournaments. With the qualification period set to conclude in the coming weeks, Singapore’s shuttlers will be hoping to put in their best efforts and secure a place in the year-end Finals.

In 2022, Loh Kean Yew made history as the first Singaporean man to qualify for the BWF World Tour Finals. However, his run ended at the season-ending tournament in Bangkok, where he was eliminated after a loss to Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in his final group match.

So, which Singapore shuttlers can qualify for the 2024 BWF World Tour Finals? Let’s take a look:

1. Men’s Singles

Leading the charge in men’s singles is Loh Kean Yew. The 27-year-old has had a standout season, accumulating 63,040 points on the BWF World Tour. He is currently ranked 12th in the race to the World Tour Finals and will need consistent, strong performances in the remaining tournaments to secure a top-8 spot for the year-end finals.

Loh became the first player from Singapore to win the BWF World Championship in 2021. Since then, despite reaching five finals, he hadn’t clinched another title until he broke his 833-day title drought by winning the 2024 Spain Masters.

His highest career ranking of #3 was achieved in 2022. At the Paris Olympics 2024, Loh displayed impressive skill, though his journey ended in the quarterfinals with a loss to Viktor Axelsen.

2. Women’s Singles

In the women’s singles category, Yeo Jia Min is Singapore’s highest-ranked athlete. The 25-year-old is currently ranked 19th in the Race to Finals with 54,350 points, putting her in a challenging position. Yeo reached the semifinals of the prestigious All England Open earlier this year.

Yeo, a former junior world number 1 and the 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist has two Super-100 tournament titles to her name and a Super-500 Finals wish.

3. Men’s and Women’s Doubles

Currently, no pairs are in contention for the World Tour Finals in these categories. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Singaporean players begin making an impact in these events in the near future.

4. Mixed Doubles

Terry Hee and Jessica Tan represent the nation’s top prospects in mixed doubles. With 57,220 points, they currently hold the 15th spot in the rankings. A few standout performances in the coming weeks could elevate them into the top 8, securing them a place at the esteemed World Tour Finals.

Terry and Jessica captured the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and also won the India Open (Super 500) tournament that same year.

The chances may seem slim for any Singapore athlete to qualify for the World Tour Finals, but there are still a few tournaments remaining. As the countdown to the 2024 BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou continues, Singapore’s athletes are determined to give their all and secure their spots in this prestigious year-end tournament.
