The Japan Open 2024, a BWF Super 750 event, kicks off in Yokohama on Tuesday, marking the first major badminton tournament following the Paris Olympics. With India’s Olympic stars taking a well-deserved break, the spotlight shifts to the country’s emerging talent.
A total of 10 Indian players will be vying for success in the event. In the men’s singles, world No. #37 Kiran George stands as India’s sole representative. He faces a challenging first-round match against Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama, ranked 30th globally.

In the doubles events, Commonwealth Games medallists N Sikki Reddy and B Sumeeth Reddy lead India’s charge in mixed doubles. They’re joined by the pair of Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath. The Panda sisters, Rutaparna and Swetaparna, will compete in women’s doubles. Notably, India doesn’t have any representation in the men’s doubles category.
On the international front, all eyes will be on Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia, fresh from his Olympic bronze medal win. Ranked world No. #6, Lee will eye his third title of the 2024 World Tour. He starts his campaign against France’s Alex Lanier, with potential matchups against top seeds like China’s Shi Yuqi (World No. 1) and Denmark’s Anders Antonsen in later rounds.
