Viktor Axelsen has withdrawn from the tournament,
The Japan Open 2024, a BWF Super 750 badminton tournament, is experiencing a wave of withdrawals from top players.
This unexpected turn of events is largely attributed to the tournament’s scheduling immediately after the Paris Olympics, leaving many top players fatigued or in need of recovery time. Among the notable absentees is Viktor Axelsen, the Danish Olympic gold medalist in men’s singles, who announced his withdrawal on social media citing exhaustion from the Paris Games. Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie has also joined him in the list of players to pull out from the competition.
The men’s doubles category has been particularly affected, with the top two seeded pairs – China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, and Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen – pulling out of the competition.

While the men’s singles and women’s doubles categories still retain a strong field, the women’s singles competition has seen some withdrawals. Olympic Gold medallist – An Se Young who failed to make it to Japan has been joined by Olympic Bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tanjung and Thai Ratchanok Intanon.
While some star power will be missing, the Japan Open 2024 still promises exciting badminton action with players like Lee Zii Jia in action.
