Srikanth, Sindhu advance to Korea Open 2022 quarters, Sen falls short

The pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy also advanced to the final eight of the competition.

It was a mixed bag for India in the second round of the Korea Open 2022. While some players succeeded in registering wins, the majority of Indian shuttlers were eliminated from the Super 500 event.

Men's Singles

Former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth had a dominant display at the Korea Open 2022 Round 2. He knocked out Misha Zilberman of Israel in two straight games. The Indian shuttler didn’t break a sweat to outclass his opponent 21-18, 21-6.

Earlier in the day, Indian youngster Lakshya Sen was handed aa defeat by Shesar Rhustavito of Indonesia. The latter took two straight games 22-20, 21-9 to stage the upset and proceed to the next round. This comes as a bit of a disappointment for Sen, who had been in top form since the start of the year.

Women's Singles

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu is safely through to the Korea Open 2022 quarter-finals. She defeated Japanese shuttler Aya Ohori with a one-sided scoreline 21-15, 21-10. She has been looking to continue her form from the Swiss Open where she won a gold medal.

However, young gun Malvika Bansod failed to book her place in the quarter-finals. She suffered defeat at the hands of Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong. The Thai shuttler comfortably moved the youngster around the court and registered victory with a convincing scoreline 21-8, 21-14.

Doubles

India's top-ranked doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Loh Kean Hean and Hee Yong Terry of Singapore. The duo handed a straight-games defeat to their opponents 21-15, 21-19. They now advance to their second successive major quarter-finals after the All England Open.

Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa lost in a nail-biting encounter against Ou Xuan Yi and Huang Ya Qiong of China. The duo fought hard to take the game to a decider but fell short after the mid-game to lose the match 22-20, 18-21, 21-14. The Indian challenge in the mixed doubles also ended with the defeat.

On the other hand, Shlok Ramachandran and Dhruv Kapila had to pull out early during their game against Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia. The Indian pair was trailing by 8-5 before retiring in the game, making way for the World No. 2 pair to enter the Korea Open quarter-finals.
