Badminton: Lakshya Sen vs Viktor Axelsen last five meetings, head-to-head

Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen’s bid for Olympic gold ended in a semifinal loss to Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen at the Paris Olympics 2024. Sen started strong, leading 17-11 in the first game, but Axelsen rallied to win 22-20. The Danish player saved three game points in a crucial comeback.

Sen began the second game aggressively, winning seven consecutive points. However, Axelsen’s powerful smashes proved too much, and he took the game 21-14.

So, let’s look at the last five meetings between these two. Four out of their last meetings were held on or before 2022 when Axelsen was in his prime form. The last meeting took place this year in the Singapore Arena.

Lakshya was no match for Axelsen in this match. There were a few rallies where Lakshya stunned everyone and even Viktor also, but overall the Danish was dominant over Lakshya, and it was a one-sided affair between the two.

#5 German Open SF 2022: Lakshya Sen defeats Viktor Axelsen (21-13, 12-21, 22-20)

Lakshya recorded his first victory against Viktor Axelsen in slow court conditions at the German Open. Sen’s aggressive play from the start frustrated Axelsen, leading to a 21-13 win in the opening game. Although Axelsen bounced back to take the second game 21-12, Sen showed remarkable resilience in the decider.

Despite trailing 9-16 at one point, Sen fought back, forcing errors from Axelsen to clinch a memorable 22-20 win in the final game.

#4 All England Open 2022 Final: Viktor Axelsen defeats Lakshya Sen (21-10, 21-15)

Lakshya Sen made history as the first Indian men’s singles player since Pullela Gopichand to reach the All England Open final. However, Axelsen proved too strong on this occasion. In a reversal of their previous meeting, Axelsen dominated the match, winning in straight games.

This final marked Sen’s third consecutive championship match of 2022, highlighting his excellent form despite the loss.

#3 Thomas Cup 2022 SF: Viktor Axelsen defeats Lakshya Sen (21-13, 21-13)

In their third encounter of 2022, Axelsen comfortably beat Sen in the Thomas Cup semi-final. Sen, who had been struggling with form throughout the tournament, couldn’t mount a significant challenge against the world number one. Axelsen’s straightforward 21-13, 21-13 victory reflected Sen’s difficult run in the competition.

#2 Singapore Open 2024 R32: Viktor Axelsen defeats Lakshya Sen (21-13, 16-21, 21-13)

After a two-year gap, Sen and Axelsen met again in Singapore. Sen, who had regained form after a challenging 2023, started strong but ultimately fell short. Axelsen took the first game 21-13, but Sen fought back to win the second 21-16.

The decider was close until the mid-game interval, with Sen leading 10-8. However, Axelsen’s eight-point run turned the tide, allowing him to close out the match 21-13 in the final game.

India’s Lakshya Sen lost to Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the men’s singles semi-final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The match took place at La Chapelle Arena.

Lakshya Sen, ranked 22nd in the world, lost to the world No. 2 Axelsen with scores of 22-20 and 21-14 in a 54-minute match. Sen started strong in the first game but couldn’t maintain his lead. In the second game, he had an impressive 7-0 lead, but Axelsen came back to win and advance to the final.
