The Spaniard made short work of the Indian shuttler in the final.
Carolina Marin thrashed World No. 7 PV Sindhu 21-12, 21-5 in the final of YONEX Swiss Open 2021 in Basel, Switzerland. The World No.3 was dominant in her display from the start and secured a comfortable victory to clinch the title.
The final of the tournament saw the first and second seeded players face off after navigating their way through the competition with relative ease. Before the fixture, Sindhu, the reigning World Champion, had not lost a single game.
The head-to-head record between the two favoured the reigning Olympic champion who had won eight of the 13 meetings until now. This was the ninth loss for Sindhu at the hands of the 27-year-old.
Carolina Marin had been in scintillating form since the start of the year and carried it into the Swiss Open as well. The Olympics silver medallist, who has otherwise struggled since the badminton action resumed after a period of shutdown due to the global pandemic, showed glimpses of her good form in the tournament.
However, she was blown away by the Spaniard in the final who took away the match in straight games. The first game saw the southpaw lead at the interval by 11-8, after an even start to the match. From that point onward, it was one-way traffic. Marin dominated the proceedings post the interval and secured the first game of the Swiss Open final.
Sindhu had no answer to Marin’s attacking gameplay as the left-hander filled the auditorium with her loud shouts on every point won. The Indian looked bereft of ideas and motivation against a charged up opponent who looked to have more desire.
The second saw Sindhu struggle for any rhythm, as her opponent shot into a 5-0 lead and led at the interval by 11-2. The match which lasted merely 35 minutes ended with Marin securing the second by 21-5, thus putting an end to the Indian shuttler's misery.
After clinching the Swiss Open 2021, Carolina Marin has already secured her third title of the year and continues to dominate the circuit. On the other hand, Sindhu must take away positives from her overall performance in the tournament and work towards regaining confidence in her game.
