PV Sindhu: I am not affected by the postponement of the Olympics

The 24-year-old badminton star is currently in self isolation following her return from Birmingham earlier in March.

One of the most hard working athletes of India, PV Sindhu usually goes on throughout the day training for the upcoming tournaments, perfecting her craft. However, since the lockdown began in India, the 24-year-old is now staying at home, following the most recent updates on the news but not following her usual routine.

The badminton star is currently in self isolation following her return from Birmingham earlier in March. “There has never been a period like this," she said to Indian Express before adding, “It’s been 12 days now that I have not left my room.”

Hundreds of sporting events have been postponed all over the world in the rise of the coronavirus pandemic - including the 2020 Tokyo Olympic. Stressing on the subject, PV Sindhu feels that it has been the right step by the authorities.

“It’s good that they are cancelling all tournaments. Even the Olympics,” she said.

"Every week, every day, the numbers have been increasing,” PV Sindhu added. "People have been telling me, ‘this was your dream… now the Olympics are postponed.’ But life comes first, then the Olympics,” the 24-year-old went onto say.

“So I don’t think it was a bad decision to postpone (the Olympics) because we don’t have any other choice. People are dying out there. Life comes first," PV Sindhu further added.

While the Olympics have been rescheduled to take place in 2021, PV Sindhu revealed she is not concerned for the development as there are other tournaments coming on. "I was preparing for the Olympics in a way that I peak at a certain point. At All-England, I felt I was getting back into the groove as well. But I am not affected by the postponement. We anyway have tournaments continuously.”

“For us, we have tournaments continuously and in every tournament, we need to work hard. It’s not like we work hard just for some tournaments and take a few others easy. So it’s not a question of reset for me, but it’s a daily process,” she added.

“If they are postponing events, there is some serious issue. We need to understand and accept that,” she says. “We are all on a pause right now,” PV Sindhu signed off with.
