The esteemed athlete vouched for the necessity of physical activities amidst the ongoing times.

PV Sindhu has requested people to make physical activity a vital part of their daily life as it can assist them in this resistance against COVID-19.The Olympic medalist had attended the inauguration of ‘Virtual Healthcare and Hygiene Expo 2020’. It is an exhibition and conference that would be conducted virtually from June 22-26. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry has organized this initiative and PV Sindhu spoke on the aforementioned issue during the commencement of the program.

She remarked, “Sports and other physical activities are very important to maintain a strong immune system and since there are yet no vaccine or treatment, sports can help win this battle.” Due to the lack of a vaccine that could help in the treatment of individuals affected by the virus, most people are relying on their internal immunity for the time being. Accordingly, the necessity of physical exercises increases for a layman.

The nationwide lockdown had provided the citizens of the country adequate time to engage in such workouts and thus build up their fitness. PV Sindhu observed, “The WHO recommends adult should do at least 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week to combat threat of heart disease, diabetics, high blood pressure, cancer and depression and it is more relevant during this pandemic.”

The 24-year-old believes that it is the ideal time to opt for a new activity. She recommends people to participate in some or the other exercises. In fact, the Padma Bhushan recipient even said that 45 minutes of exercise is essential for everyone. The pandemic has drastically disrupted the training methods of several athletes, especially the ones like Sindhu who were preparing for the Tokyo Olympics that was earlier supposed to be held this year.

Certain sportspersons have resumed their respective practices and regimes. However, the Hyderabad-based badminton players have to wait for a go-ahead from the Telangana government as lockdown is still implemented in the state. As the states are now responsible to decide upon the application and lifting of the same, some athletes have been fortunate enough to resume their training whilst others have had to wait longer.
