Lakshya Sen withdrew mid-match due to lower back pain and spasm.
Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen was forced to retire midway through his opening-round match at the Singapore Open 2025 on Wednesday, raising concerns over his fitness. Facing Taiwan’s Lin Chun-yi, Lakshya started strong by taking the first game 21-15, but things took a turn in the decider. After trailing 5-13 in the third game, the Indian shuttler decided to retire, citing physical discomfort.
Later in the day, an official statement from Team Lakshya Sen shed light on the situation.
“Lakshya had to retire from his Singapore Open match due to lower back pain and spasms. He had experienced similar discomfort during practice last Saturday and wasn’t fully fit. The focus now is on rest and recovery. Thank you for your continued support,” the statement read.
This marks Lakshya’s third consecutive early exit on the BWF World Tour. Earlier in May, he lost in the round of 32 at the Thailand Open to Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen in a tightly contested three-game match. In April, he suffered a straight-games loss to Taiwan’s Chia Hao Lee at the Badminton Asia Championships.
His last deep run came at the All England Open in March, where he reached the quarter-finals but was convincingly beaten by China’s Li Shi Feng.
Had he advanced today, Lakshya would have faced Li Shi Feng once again—potentially a rematch of their All England clash.
Lakshya was one of India’s top medal hopes in the Paris Olympics 2024. He had a bittersweet campaign where he reached the semi-finals, defeating Jonatan Christie, HS Prannoy, and Chou Tien Chen on his way, but fell short of a medal after losing to Viktor Axelsen and Lee Zii Jia in back-to-back matches.
Injuries have begun to cast a shadow over what was once seen as a meteoric rise. The 23-year-old, known for his agility and attacking game, has struggled to maintain consistency in 2025. Around the same time last year, at the Singapore Open 2024, Sen lost in the opening round to Axelsen in a three-set match.
With a packed BWF calendar ahead, rest and rehabilitation will now be the top priority. Fans across India will be hoping for a swift and strong comeback from one of the country’s brightest badminton talents.
