India's squad for BWF World Junior Championships announced

The tournament will begin on October 24 in Spain.

India had announced the squad for the BWF World Junior Championships to be held in Spain from October 24 to 30, 2022. The Junior Championships were first held in the year 1992 and since then have taken place regularly. Spain will be hosting the tournament for the second time having first hosted in 2016. In the last edition in 2019, India couldn't win a single medal but would end the drought this time at the 22nd edition. Overall India has won nine medals - a Gold, three Silver, and five Bronze medals.

Boys Singles

Sankar Muthusamy

Sankar has been around the junior circuit for quite some time. He was the youngest to play at the age of 15  in the PBL for the Chennai franchise in 2019. Sankar has taken part twice in the TNBSL ( Tamil Nadu Badminton Super League) and was a marquee player.

He has played many International Challengers and recently beat Tommy Suggiarto current WR 42 and 2014 World Championship bronze medallist at the Vietnam Open, 2022. His last International win was at Iran Junior International Series in February 2022.

Raghav 

Raghav Bhatt has been performing well in the Indian Junior ranking tournaments. He won both the Junior Ranking tournaments held in Goa and Panchkula thereby sealing his spot for the World Junior Championships.

Ayush Shetty

The 17-year-old recently finished semifinalist losing to Muhammed Alin at the Indian Junior International Grand Prix. Ayush also progressed to the pre-quarterfinals of the Kotak International series in August 2022. 

Girls Singles

Anupama Upadhyay

Anupama Upadhyay is currently ranked world no 54 in the BWF women’s rankings and is one of the most experienced to take part in the World Juniors. She had a good start to the season progressing to the latter stages of the tournaments and winning the Polish open. But in the 2nd half of the season, she has not performed well losing out frequently in the opening stages.

Unnati Hooda became the youngest to win a BWF Super 100 tournament at the Odisha Open and since then has been followed by many in India. At 15 she is progressing well but needs to show consistency in finishing matches.

Rakshitha Sree

Rakshitha has been performing in the junior circuit and has taken her spot based on her results during the Junior trials. She has not played many International meets but has played a few tournaments held recently in India; Maharashtra and the Chattisgarh International Challenge.

In the doubles category, India will be spearheaded by two doubles pairs each in the boy's and

girls’ doubles and mixed doubles categories. Arsh Mohammad and Abhinav Thakur along with Nicholas Nathan Raj and Tushar Suveer will play in the boys’ doubles.

In women’s doubles, Ishrani Baruah and Devika Sihag along with Tamil Nadu’s Shreya Balaji and Srinidhi will take part.

Ishrani/Devika recently won the Goa Ranking series with Shreya/Srinidhi winning the South Zone state meet.

Samarveer/Radhika Sharma, Vighnesh Thathineni/Sri Sai Sravya Lakkamraju will take part in the mixed doubles event to finalize the Indian squad.
