The tournament is set to decide the participants for the upcoming World Cup.

It is time for the promising female basketball players from India to take centre stage after the impressive performance by the boy’s team at the 2022 FIBA U16 Asian Championship. The girls will participate in the 2022 FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship. The tournament will start from 24 June 2022 onwards and run until 30 June 2022 in Amman, Jordan.

Most importantly, it is the qualifying tournament for the upcoming 2022 U17 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The tournament will take place later in July in Debrecen, Hungary. There will be a lot of exciting basketball action in the upcoming week. It will be interesting to see which teams finally make it to the World Cup from Asia.

Recently, Indian U16 boys created history by finishing fifth at the U16 Asian Championships. They missed out on a World Cup appearance by a whiskey. However, their feat will certainly motivate the girls to do better and perhaps go longer than their male counterparts:

Groups

There are 13 participating nations in total. They are divided into two divisions, namely, Division A and B. Division A will have the likes of Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and India. The top four teams advance to the semi-finals. More importantly, all four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the World Cup regardless of which nation wins the Asian Championship.

Division B will have two groups. Group A consists of Indonesia, the Philippines, Samoa, and Syria. Group B on the other hand has the likes of Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Jordan and Iran. The format suggests that the second and third place of each group advance to the qualifying to semi-finals. The winners of these matches advance to the semi-finals to face the top teams from each group.

Indian team

The squad that will represent India is as follows:

Osheen Singh, Deepthi Raja, Chanchana Sathiyabama, Moni Adla, Prarthana Salve, Muskan, Riccha Ravi, Manmeet Kaur, Adithi Nagarajan, Komalpreet Kaur, Arshiya Dabas, Harima Sundhari Munishkannan.

Key Player

Indian skipper Manmeet Kaur will be key to India’s success at the 2022 FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship. She plays as a center and will hope to shine for the country at the tournament. Komalpreet Kaur and her were trained at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy and hail from the city as well. The 185cm tall player will aim to lead the squad by example and her performances could motivate the rest of the team.
