Divya Deshmukh felicitated by Maharashtra CM after FIDE Women's Chess World Cup win

By winning the FIDE World Cup, Divya Deshmukh also earned her Grandmaster title.
Newly-crowned FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup 2025 Divya Deshmukh was felicitated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. She was also awarded a cash prize of Rs 3 crore by the state Govt.
Earlier this week, the 19-year-old chess prodigy stunned the chess world by defeating veteran and compatriot Koneru Humpy in Batumi, Georgia, on July 29 to become the youngest-ever winner of the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup.
With this victory, Divya also earned the most prestigious honour in the sport, a Grandmaster title, becoming only the fourth Indian woman to achieve the feat.

Her homecoming was met with lots of celebration. At a special event in her hometown Nagpur, Divya was felicitated for her incredible achievement.
During the ceremony, she was presented with a cheque for Rs 3 crore by the Chief Minister himself.
“This is a very special moment for me,” Divya said. “I’m so happy that I could be a small part of motivating and inspiring children. I feel truly grateful.”
The Maharashtra government has also pledged continued support to Divya as she pursues greater achievements in her career.

Divya is no stranger to big stages. She is a three-time Chess Olympiad medallist (two golds and a bronze) and has previously won titles at both the Asian Championship and the World Junior Championship.
Following her World Cup win, both Divya and finalist Koneru Humpy have secured their spots at the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
