FIDE World Chess Rapid & Blitz Championship 2024: Live streaming, TV channel, where and how to watch?

The FIDE World Chess Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024 will take place on Wall Street in New York from December 26 to 31 with more than 300 chess players expecting to participate competing for a prize pool of nearly $1. 5 million.

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen a five-time world champion will attempt to defend his rapid and blitz titles which he won last year in Samarkand. The Norwegian who has claimed six blitz and five rapid championships will face strong competition from American players Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura currently ranked second and third in the world.

This tournament is particularly important for Indian player Arjun Erigaisi. He needs to win either the rapid or blitz section to surpass Caruana in the FIDE Circuit Rating and secure a spot in the 2026 Candidates tournament.

The rapid championship will be held from December 26 to 29 allowing each player 15 minutes plus an additional 10 seconds for each move. The blitz section, scheduled for December 30 and 31, will feature a new format that provides 3 minutes and 2 seconds per move culminating in a knockout round for the top eight players.

In the women’s division current World Champion Ju Wenjun leads a strong group that includes former champions like Alexandra Kosteniuk, Bibisara Assaubayeva, Valentina Gunina and Kateryna Lagno. The hopes for the US team rest on current champion Carissa Yip and former titleholder Irina Krush.

The tournament venues have significant historical backgrounds adding to the event’s prestige. The open section will take place at Cipriani Wall Street, which was once the New York Stock Exchange building, while the women’s tournament will be played at the 48 Wall Street—the former site of the Bank of New York.

On December 29 a “Wall Street Gambit” conference will feature chess legends Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand and Caruana along with leaders from the financial sector discussing the connections between chess finance and artificial intelligence.
