India is guaranteed a gold medal at the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup 2025 as Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh face off in a historic all-Indian final. The much-anticipated clash is taking place at the Sheraton Hotel in Batumi, Georgia from July 26 to 28.

This final marks the first time two Indian players have reached the summit clash of the Women’s World Cup, showcasing the country’s growing dominance in global chess. Humpy, 38, brings decades of experience as a Grandmaster and reigning Women’s Rapid World Champion, while Divya, 19, represents the fearless next generation.

The final will be played across two classical games on July 26 and 27, followed by rapid/blitz tiebreaks on July 28 if needed. Both players have already secured qualification for the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament, but the World Cup crown and a $50,000 prize remains up for grabs.

Koneru Humpy is a former World Rapid Champion and one of the most experienced players in women’s chess today. A recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award, Humpy has consistently been India’s top woman player for nearly two decades. She previously won the World Cup bronze in 2021 and now aims for her first title in this format.

Divya Deshmukh, on the other hand, is the rising star of Indian chess. At just 19, she has already won multiple national and international titles, including the Asian Women’s Championship. Divya reached the final with back-to-back classical wins over top seeds like Tan Zhongyi and Dronavalli Harika, without needing a single tiebreak an impressive feat at this level. Meanwhile, Humpy had to dig deep, surviving tense tiebreaks to defeat China’s Lei Tingjie in the semifinals.
