Who are medal contenders for India on Day 10 of Commonwealth Games 2022

Its expected to be another hectic day of action for Indian athletes.

Its been an eventful Commonwealth Games for India so far. While some favourites like Manika Batra and Lovlina Borgohain have disappointed, some other surprise heroes have emerged. This has been particularly true in track and field with names such as Tejaswin Shankar, Avinash Sable and Priyanka Goswami impressing.

Indeed, as we approach the finale of the games, India are also collecting medals at a rapid rate. With that said, let's look at the many medal events set to take place on Sunday.

Athletics

Praveen Chithravel, Eldhose Paul and Abdul Aboobacker Narangolintevid – Men’s Triple Jump Finals

Three Indian triple jumpers will compete in the finals of the men’s triple jump scheduled to be held on Day 10 of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Pravin Chithravel, Eldhose Paul and Abdul Aboobacker Narangolintevid will compete on Sunday. In all the participating athletes, Aboobacker has season’s best jump of 17.19m. Praveen has season’s best jump of 17.18m while Eldhose Paul has 16.99m.

Sandeep Kumar and Amit – Men’s 10,000m Race Walk Final

India’s Sandeep Kumar and Amit will participate in Men’s 10,000m Race Walk Final on Day 10.

Shilpa Rani and Annu Rani – Women’s Javelin Throw Final

Shilpa Rani and Annu Rani will contest in the women’s javelin throw final. Annu Rani finished seventh in recently concluded World Athletics Championships in Eugene where Australia’s Kelsey Lee Barber defended her title with a throw of 66.91m. Annu Rani had a best throw of 61.12m in the same event.

Rohit Yadav and DP Manu – Men’s Javelin Throw Final

Absence of Olympic Gold medalist and poster-boy of India Neeraj Chopra will surely be felt when Men’s Javelin final will start on 6th August. Abdominal strain led in World Athletics Championships led to his exit from Commonwealth Games 2022. Though, he isn’t there but there will be two Indians Rohit Yadav and DP Manu to compete in the Men’s Javelin Throw Final on Sunday.

Indian Women’s Team – Women’s 4 x 400m Relay final

The Indian women’s team will look to secure a medal in Women’s 4 x 400m relay final on Sunday. India’s 400m relay squad consists of Dutee Chand, Hima Das, Srabani Nanda, Jilna Madathile Veettil, and Simi Noormblaka Samuuel.

Indian Men’s Team – 4 x 400m Relay Final

The Indian men’s 4 x 400m relay team finished second in its best race on Friday. The Indian quartet of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Noah Nirmal Tom, Mohammad Ajmal and Amol Jacob clocked timing of 3:06:97s to finish second behind Kenya in heat 2. Now they will compete in the final on Sunday.

PV Sindhu – Women’s Singles Sem-final – Badminton

Olympic silver and bronze medalist PV Sindhu will go one on one against Jia Min Yeo in the Semi-final match on Sunday. If she wins the match, she will be assured of a medal or else she will fight for the bronze medal match.

Boxing

Nitu Ghanghas

Indian boxer Nitu Ghanghas reached the finals after defeating England’s Priyanka Dhillon in Women’s over 45kg-48kg category. She will take on England’s Demie Jade Resztan in the gold medal clash.

Amit Panghal

Star Indian boxer Amit Panghal will fight for the gold medal against England Kiaran MacDonald. He defeated  Patrick Chinyemba in Men’s over 48kg-51kg Flyweight semi-final. Amit Panghal won the silver medal at Gold Coast Games in 2018 and the Gold medal at Asian Games in 2018. He also won a gold medal in Boxing World Cup 2020. Going into the Tokyo Olympics, India had high hopes for him but he failed to take any medal.

Nikhat Zareen

Nikhat Zareen will compete against Carly MC Nail in Women’s Over 48kg-50kg(Light Flyweight) in Gold medal match. She defeated England’s Stubley Alfia Savannah in the semi-final.

Women’s Hockey Team  - Ind vs NZ – Bronze Medal Match at Commonwealth Games

Indian Women’s hockey team will face New Zealand in Bronze medal clash on Day 10. India lost to Australia 3-0 in penalty shootout in semi-final which was marred by controversy. India will look to move on from that incident and take the bronze home.

Table Tennis

Sreeja Akula -  Women’s Singles Bronze medal match

Sreeja Akula will take on Yangzi Liu of Australia in Women’s Singles Bronze medal clash. She lost her semi-final against Tainwei Feng 6-11, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12.

Achanta Sharath Kamal/Gnanasekaran – Men’s Doubles Gold Medal Match

The men’s duo pair of Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran will fight for the gold medal against England’s Drinkhali Paul and Pitchford Liam. They beat Finn Luu and Nicholas Lum in the semi-final 8-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-1, 11-8.

Achanta Sharath Kamal – Men’s Singles Semi-final

Achanta Sharath Kamal will fight against Paul Drinkhall in the semi-final clash. Sharath will look to finish on high note in his last CWG.

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran – Men’s Singles Semi-final

Achanta Sharath Kamal/Sreeja Akula – Mixed Doubles Gold Medal Match

The mixed doubles pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula will fight for the gold medal against Javen Choong and Karen Lyne on Sunday. They defeated Nicholas Lum and Minhyung Jee 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 12-14, 11-7 in the Semi-final.

Dipika Pallikal/Saurav Ghosal – Mixed Doubles Bronze Medal Match – Squash

Indian mixed doubles pair of Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal will contest in the Bronze medal match. They faced defeat in the semi-final against New Zealand’s Paul Coll and Joelle King.

India vs TBD – Women’s Cricket Gold Medal Match

India defeated host nation England to advance to the gold medal clash of CWG’22. India will now take on the winner of semi-final 2 between Australia and New Zealand.
