The country has endured a mixed bag at the event so far.

India currently stands at sixth position with 10 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022, Birmingham. After five days of competition, India have four gold, three silver and three bronze medals. Seven of the 10 medals have come from weightlifting. India will look to increase their medal tally in the coming days, as athletics and other events finals are lined up. Let’s look at probable medal prospects on Day 6 of the Birmingham CWG’22.

Purnima Pandey – Women’s 87+kg category Finals – Weightlifting

India have already fetched seven medals in weightlifting and are riding high on confidence. On Day 6, the weightlifting squad will have another chance to increase the number when Purnima Pandey will contest in the women’s 87+kg finals at the Commonwealth Games 2022, Birmingham.

She had qualified for the Commonwealth Games after clinching gold in the women’s 87+kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent in 2021. At that time, she created eight national records on her way to gold. She lifted 229kg to stand on top of the podium. At the CWG, she would look to finish on a high note.

Lovepreet Singh – Men’s 109kg category Finals – Weightlifting

Lovepreet Singh will also walk in the weightlifting arena on Wednesday to compete in the men’s 109kg finals. Hailing from Punjab, Lovepreet first impressed all as a young lifter when he landed a bronze at the Asian Junior Championships.

The Indian weightlifter has a silver medal to his name in the men’s 109kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships at Tashkent in 2021.

Gurdeep Singh – Men’s 109+kg category Finals – Weightlifting

Gurdeep Singh will compete in the men’s 109+kg finals which is scheduled on Wednesday. The Punjab-born weightlifter is an emerging star in Indian weightlifting. In 2020, he broke three records at three separate levels.

It helped him win gold in the 105kg weight class at the national championships. Gurdeep lifted a total weight of 388kg at the World Championships in Anaheim. At the CWG, this young weightlifter has a chance to showcase his talent to the world.
