Rohit Sharma holds the record for most sixes hit by a captain in international cricket.

Six-hitting is one of the most interesting feature of cricket. T20I cricket’s advent has made the game more interesting. England’s approach of ‘Bazball’ under coach Brendon McCullum in test cricket in recent times has made the longest format more fan-friendly for the current generation. The shift after the 90s saw players opting for a more aggressive and counter-attacking approach than to wait for the right time.

MS Dhoni, Eoin Morgan and current Indian captain Rohit Sharma are the only three batters with more than 200 sixes in international cricket as a captain. Let’s have a look at the top 10 captains with the most sixes in international cricket.

Here are the top 10 captains who have hit most sixes in international cricket:

10. Sourav Ganguly (India) – 132 Sixes :

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was known for his ability to hit long sixes in international cricket. Sourav Ganguly played many big knocks for India in his international career. He smashed 247 sixes in his international career. 132 sixes out of those 247 came as captain of the Indian team. Sourav Ganguly led India in 49 test matches and 146 ODI games. He scored 7665 runs in 218 innings as captain.

9. Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 134 Sixes :

Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle began his international career in 1999 and announced his retirement 22 years later in 2021. Chris Gayle got the opportunity to lead West Indies in 90 International matches. Known for his big hitting ability, Chris Gayle smashed 134 sixes as captain of West Indies in international cricket. Gayle scored 3984 runs in 102 innings as captain of West Indies.

8. AB de Villiers (South Africa) – 135 Sixes :

Former South African captain AB de Villiers is also among the leading six-hitters in international cricket. AB de Villiers smashed 135 sixes in his international career as skipper. While captaining South Africa, AB De Villiers played 124 matches and smashed 5350 runs in 120 innings. AB de Villers also holds the record of hitting fastest ODI hundred in just 31 balls, which came against West Indies at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in 2015.

7. Aaron Finch (Australia) – 137 Sixes :

Recently retired former Australian skipper Aaron Finch was also known for his magnificent six-hitting ability. Aaron Finch was a top-class performer for Australia and a successful captain in limited-over formats of the game. Aaron Finch smashed 137 sixes in 131 matches as the captain of the side. He scored 4341 runs in 131 innings at an average of 35.58. He also scored seven centuries for Australia when he was the captain of the side.

6. Virat Kohli (India) – 138 Sixes :

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli is also among the list of international skippers with the most number of sixes. Virat Kohli had a terrific run as skipper of the Indian side. Virat Kohli smashed 138 sixes in his international career as captain of Indian cricket team. Kohli is also among the list of captains with the most number of runs, he scored 12883 runs in 213 games as a captain across formats.

5. Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) – 170 Sixes :

Brendon McCullum enjoyed the most in the final days of his cricketing career. Brendon McCullum, former New Zealand captain, retired from cricket with a unique record for the fastest test century. Brendon McCullum led New Zealand to the World Cup finals in 2015 and his aggressive approach became the biggest talking point. Brendon McCullum smashed 170 sixes in 121 matches as Kiwi skipper.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has also made a big name for himself with his power-hitting ability. Ricky Ponting was one of the finest captains to lead the Australia and won two ICC Cricket World Cups in 2003 and 2007. Ricky Ponting smashed 171 sixes in 324 games for Australia as captain. He scored 15440 runs in 376 innings, he also smashed 41 centuries across formats during his tenure leading the Aussies.

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni started his career as a dasher but since taking up the leadership role, Dhoni changed his approach a little at the international level. In his stint of nine years as the captain of Indian team, MS Dhoni smashed 211 sixes in 332 games. Dhoni batted with an outstanding average of 46.89. He scored 11207 runs in 330 innings consisting of 11 centuries.

Eoin Morgan will be a historical figure in England cricket as he led English side to their maiden ODI World Cup win in 2019. Former English skipper Eoin Morgan smashed 233 sixes as the captain of England Cricket Team. He led England in both ODIs and T20Is. Morgan played 198 matches as captain of England Cricket Team and scored 5872 at an average of 38.37. Morgan scored nine centuries as the captain of England.

The current Indian skipper was on a six-hitting spree in 2023. He smashed the most number of sixes in the calendar year 2023. Rohit is among the only three international cricket captains with more than 200 sixes. Rohit Sharma has so far hit 242 sixes as captain of Indian cricket team at international level. Rohit has scored 5200+ runs in 139 innings with 11 centuries as captain of the Indian side.
