The dust has settled on the enthralling five-match test series between India and England, but the echoes of young Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s exploits continue to reverberate. The left-handed batter took the cricketing world by storm with a series for the ages.
Jaiswal’s dominant presence at the crease not only played a pivotal role in India’s success but also saw him etch his name in the record books with a series of history-defying achievements. From surpassing legendary figures to setting new benchmarks, Jaiswal’s performances have redefined expectations for young batter and signaled the arrival of a potential future great.
Here’s the list of records achieved by Yashasvi Jaiswal during the five-match test series against England:
1. Most runs in a test series for India against England
Jaiswal, known for his aggressive stroke play and ability to dominate attacks, amassed a staggering 712 runs across the five-match test series. With this, he shattered the previous record of most runs by an Indian batter in a test series against England. Virat Kohli scored 655 runs in the 2016–17 series.
The left-handed batter showed remarkable consistency when he smashed two double centuries and three fifties, showcasing his ability to bat for long duration and convert starts into big scores. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Jaiswal’s young career.
2. Second fastest to 1000 test runs among Indians (by innings)
The recently concluded India-England five-match test series saw a young star showcase his talent in the longest format of the game. Jaiswal didn’t just score big runs in the England test series; he did it at a blistering pace, becoming the second-fastest Indian batter to reach 1,000 runs in terms of innings played in the longest format.
Jaiswal achieved this remarkable feat in just 16 innings, surpassing the likes of batting legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Cheteshwar Pujara, who both reached the milestone in 21 and 18 innings, respectively. The only Indian batter ahead of him is Vinod Kambli, who holds the record with an incredible 14 innings.
3. Fewest matches to 1000 test runs among Indians (9 matches)
During the test series, Yashasvi Jaiswal completed his 1000 test career runs, and he reached the milestone in just nine matches, which is the fastest in terms of matches taken to reach the landmark among Indians. Previously Sunil Gavaskar and Cheteshwar Pujara held the record jointly, achieving the feat in 11 matches.
Overall, Sir Don Bradman holds the record of scoring first 1000 test career runs in just seven matches.
4. Most runs by a left-handed Indian batter in a test series
The Indian opener and left-handed batter, not only dominated the five-match test series against England with his bat but also rewrote the record books for Indian left-handed batters. Jaiswal amassed a staggering 712 runs across the five-match series, which is the most by an Indian left-handed batter in a bilateral test series. Previously, Sourav Ganguly held the the record. Ganguly smashed 545 runs against Pakistan in 2007 test series.
5. Second Indian batter to score over 700 runs in a test series
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal dominated the five-match test series against England. Jaiswal amassed a staggering 712 runs across the series as he etched his name in history alongside legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar.
Jaiswal’s phenomenal run in the test series against England made him just the second Indian batter to score over 700 runs in a bilateral test series. The young Indian opener joined legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaksar, who achieved this historic milestone twice in his career.
The former India captain achieved this feat against the West Indies on tour in 1971 (his debut series), where he scored 774 runs, and at home in 1978/79, where he amassed 732 runs. Jaiswal’s inclusion in such an elite company speaks volumes about his exceptional talent and his ability to perform consistently at the highest level.
6. Most sixes in a bilateral test series (26)
The 22-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal didn’t just dominate with his run-scoring ability in the five-match test series against England but he unleashed his destructive mode by smashing sixes against the likes of the English bowlers James Anderson, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir, Tom Hartley and Joe Root.
The aggressive opener shattered the record for hitting most sixes in a bilateral test series by an Indian batter. Jaiswal’s bat spat fire throughout the series, launching 26 sixes across the five matches. This surpasses the previous record of 19 sixes held by Rohit Sharma, achieved against South Africa in 2019.
Jaiswal’s six-hitting prowess not only entertained fans but also instilled fear in the hearts of England’s bowlers.
7. Joint-most sixes in an innings in test cricket (12)
The young batter, Yashasvi Jaiswal, equaled the record for most sixes by any batter in an innings in test cricket. During his outstanding knock of 214* off 236 balls in the third test in Rajkot, Jaiswal smashed 12 sixes, which is most by an Indian batter in a test innings and overall joint-highest along with Wasim Akram, who achieved this feat way back in 1996 against Zimbabwe.
8. First Indian to hit two double hundreds against England in a test series
The five-match test series between India and England wasn’t just a battle for cricketing supremacy but it became a stage for Yashasvi Jaiswal to etch his name in history of the longest format. The Indian opener left everyone awestruck as he became the first Indian batter ever to score two double centuries in a single test series against England.
In the five-match series between India and England, Jaiswal played a match-winning knock in the first innings of the second test match, where India won the match and leveled the series 1-1. During the Visakhapatnam test, the left-handed batter smashed 209 runs and helped his side to a 106-run win over the Ben Stokes-led English side.
In the third test match, Jaiswal hammered 214* off 236 deliveries, including 14 fours and 12 sixes in his innings and became the first Indian batter ever to smash two double tons against England in a bilateral test series.
9. Third Indian batter to hit two double hundreds in a test series
During the five-match test series against England, the Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name into cricketing folklore by becoming only the third Indian batter to smash two double centuries in a bilateral test series.
The other two Indians who are included in this historic list are Vinoo Mankad (vs New Zealand, 1955–56) and Virat Kohli (vs Sri Lanka, 2017–18).
10. Third Indian batter to hit two double hundreds in two consecutive matches
After smashing consecutive double tons in the second (Vishakapatnam) and third (Rajkot) test matches against England in the five-match series, the 22-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal became just the third Indian batter after Vinod Kambli and veteran batter Virat Kohli to smash two double centuries in successive test matches for India.
Vinod Kambli scored 224 in Mumbai against England, in February 1993. Kambli then scored 227 in Delhi, which was his next test innings, and it came against Zimbabwe in March 1993. Modern-day chase-master Virat Kohli scored two consecutive double hundreds during the 2017 test series against Sri Lanka. So far, there have been only eight instances of batsmen hitting consecutive double hundreds in tests.
