10 stars of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 who won't feature in 2023 World Cup
England to take on New Zealand in the opening clash of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 saw a slow start to the tournament, but as the event went on, it gathered momentum with close games, a few great performances, and also valiant efforts inside the field. From Eoin Morgan’s 17 sixes in one innings against Afghanistan to Lasith Malinga’s magical spell against England and Carlos Brathwaite’s century almost chasing down New Zealand’s total single-handedly, the tournament saw some magical performances. Most of the stars from the previous editions have been sidelined from their national team selections or have announced their retirement.
Fans will miss out on witnessing some big names representing their country in the World Cup 2023 and putting out their best to bring glory. Let’s have a look at the top 10 stars who did make their presence count in 2019 but will be missing out on the World Cup 2023 in India. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 5 at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, with defending champions England taking on runners-up New Zealand. The final will be played at the same venue on November 19.
Here are the 10 stars of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 who won't feature in 2023 World Cup:
1. Aaron Finch (Australia)
Australian captain Aaron Finch had a wonderful World Cup 2019 along with his opening partner David Warner. He scored 507 runs in his 10 innings, he smashed 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries in the tournament. Finch announced his retirement from limited-overs cricket right before the T20 World Cup in 2022 in Australia. He led Australia to the semi-finals in 2019 but they were knocked out by England at Edgbaston in Birmingham
2 . Shikhar Dhawan (India)
Indian opening batter Shikhar Dhawan is out of the scheme for Indian selectors. Dhawan has been consistently ignored by the selectors since the Bangladesh tour in 2022. Shikhar Dhawan had a wonderful start to the World Cup 2019, but he had to come back to India after sustaining an injury to his thumb in second game of the tournament against Australia. He scored a century before leaving the World Cup 2019 squad in an unfortunate way.
3. Jofra Archer (England)
England’s pace bowler, Jofra Archer, played a pivotal role in England's 2019 World Cup campaign. Archer was among the top wicket-takers in this edition. He picked up 20 wickets in 11 games in the tournament. Archer ended up as the third leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Now, after being hit with multiple injuries in the last 2-3 years, Archer is out of England's preliminary World Cup squad.
4. Mashrafe Mortaza (Bangladesh)
Legendary Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza may have been a below-average performer for Bangladesh in the World Cup 2019, but his leadership did make an impact on the team's campaign. Under Mortaza, Bangladesh finished above West Indies and Afghanistan with six points in nine games. Bangladesh defeated South Africa, West Indies, and Afghanistan. They almost came close to winning against New Zealand as well. Mortaza has retired from ODIs in March 2020.
5. MS Dhoni (India)
Former Indian World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni will also not feature in the 2023 World Cup. MS Dhoni’s final international game for India remains the World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand, where he scored a 50 in his innings. Dhoni played in four World Cups (2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019) and retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. Dhoni had a great World Cup and scored 273 runs in 2019.
6. Eoin Morgan (England)
England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan smashed 17 sixes against Afghanistan in the World Cup 2019 league game. He led England from the front and won the most coveted trophy for the first time. Morgan smashed 371 runs in his 10 innings in the previous edition. Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket in June of last year. And hence, he won't be participating in this year's mega tournament.
7. Faf du Plessis (South Africa)
Sidelined after the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Faf du Plessis has not played any One-day game for his national side in the last four years.. Faf was the only good performer for South Africa in the World Cup 2019, scoring 387 runs in nine innings. Faf announced his retirement from test cricket in 2021, and has been sidelined from the limited overs squad of South Africa since then.
8. Hashim Amla (South Africa)
South Africa had a poor outing in the World Cup 2019 and finished 7th in the points table, all thanks to their last two game wins that elevated them from 9th to 7th position. Hashim Amla did have a decent 2019 World Cup, but they failed to build on the momentum throughout the entire tournament. Amla is now retired and will not be seen in the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023.
9. Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka)
Lasith Malinga’s 4 for 43 against England will be remembered for a long time. Malinga, with his brutal yorkers, defended a low total in the high-scoring event. Sri Lanka defended 233 runs against England, and Malinga played a huge role in the team's win. Soon after the World Cup 2019, during a home series against Bangladesh, Lasith Malinga announced his retirement from ODIs.
10. Rishabh Pant (India)
Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant will miss out on the World Cup 2023 due to an unfortunate accident he suffered last year in December. Entertainer Pant will be missed by everyone at the upcoming mega event as he is still in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. He played only four games in 2019 and scored 116 runs in the tournament.
