Only 20 times two batsmen have hit double centuries in an innings in test cricket.

Scoring a century in test cricket is terrific. Converting it into a double century is special. Two batsmen scoring a double century in the same innings is simply incredible as it is a rarely-achieved feat.

There have been numerous instances of multiple batsmen scoring a century in the same innings. There have been a lot of occasions where one batsman recorded a double hundred while others around him reached the milestone of centuries.

However, two batsmen notched up a double ton in the same innings in test cricket is something that we don’t get to see often, especially in the last decade or so as pitches have tended to assist the bowlers from day 1 and the introduction of the ICC World Test Championship has incentivised the preparation of bowling-friendly surfaces.

There have been a few great batting duos who have spent large amounts of time at the crease together to rack up double centuries in the same innings. In fact, there have been only 20 instances in the 147-year history of test cricket when two batsmen recorded a double ton in the same innings. None of them, though, manage to repeat the feat.

The first such instance was back in the 1934 Ashes, when at The Oval, Don Bradman and William Ponsford registered double tons in Australia’s first innings, leading their side to a victory by 562 runs.

The latest occasion of two batsmen scoring a double hundred in the same innings occurred when Joe Root and Harry Brook achieved it against Pakistan in Multan in October 2024. The pair helped England piled up over 750 runs in reply to Pakistan’s 556.
