Bangladesh registered their maiden test win against Pakistan on 25th August, 2024.
Bangladesh created history on Sunday, August 25, 2024, as they achieved their maiden test win over Pakistan. This happened in the first of the two tests being played in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets on day 5 of the 1st test.
After being asked to bat first by Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Pakistan found themselves reeling at 16/3. They recovered a bit thanks to a 98-run partnership between Saim Ayub (56) and Saud Shakeel, which took them to 114 runs. But when Saim fell, Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan took over the run-making responsibilities.
Shakeel (141) along with Mohammad Rizwan added 240 runs for the fifth wicket and took Pakistan out of trouble. Mohammad Rizwan made 171* as Shan Masood declared the innings at 448/6d.
Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam scored 93 runs to give a good start to his team and Mominul Haque added 50 runs, despite Bangladesh losing a few wickets. But, Mushfiqur Rahim anchored one end and formed important partnerships with Litton Das (56) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (77), propelling Bangladesh to 565. Rahim was dismissed for 191 runs, but he helped Bangladesh take a critical 117-run advantage.
In their second innings, Pakistan batters capitulated against Bangladesh spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 4/21 and Shakib Al Hasan took 3/44. Pakistan folded for 146 runs with Mohammad Rizwan with 51 and Abdullah Shafique with 37 showing some resistance.
Bangladesh were set 30 runs to win, which they did without losing any wickets.
Bangladesh now have tests win over 9 out of 11 test-playing nations
This isn’t the first time Bangladesh have startled a considerably larger opposition. They have done this several times before, demonstrating their ability to achieve great things despite their brief history as a test-playing nation.
Bangladesh’s first test win came against Zimbabwe in 2005. They went on to overcome the West Indies in 2009, winning the series. However, one of their most notable moments was their 20-run victory over Australia in Mirpur in 2017.
They now have at least one win against seven of the original test-playing nations, including Australia, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe. They have also defeated the only two teams that gained test-playing nation status after them: Afghanistan and Ireland.
However, the only two teams Bangladesh are yet to defeat in test cricket are India, against whom they made their test debut in 2000, and South Africa. South Africa and Bangladesh have played 14 tests till now and South Africa have won 12 of them, while two ended in a draw.
On the other hand, they have played 13 tests against India and have lost 12 of them, while two ended in a draw. The most recent in 2022, Bangladesh lost to India 2-0 in their own backyard.
Bangladesh will next travel to India in September for a two-match test series and will look to add to their list of teams defeated in test cricket.
