Four Indian cricketers who might retire from ODIs after Cricket World Cup 2023
The upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 might be end of the road for some veteran Indian cricketers.
The 13th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is all set to start in India. The mega event will kick-off with a match between the last edition’s finalists on October 5. England will take on New Zealand in Ahmedabad in the tournament’s opener. This will be the first time India will host the entire tournament on its own. The hosts will open their campaign on October 8 against Australia.
This will be a brilliant chance for India to end their trophy drought at home, as they did in 2011 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. But after that World Cup, a number of senior players hung up their boots in the 50-over format. This time as well, there are a few senior players who are likely to retire from ODIs after the World Cup gets over.
Here are four veteran Indian players who might retire from ODIs after the conclusion of the Cricket World Cup 2023
4. Shikhar Dhawan:
Veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is one of the Indian cricketers who might call it quits from ODIs. The 37-year-old is not part of the Indian team now as the management has moved on to youngsters. Dhawan played his last ODI match in December 2022 against Bangladesh. And with no opportunity for him, it looks quite understandable that the veteran opener will put the curtain on his ODI career, or rather, international career. Though Dhawan has some incredible numbers at the top. In 167 ODIs, he has scored 6793 runs at 44.11, with 17 centuries and 37 half-centuries.
3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar:
Veteran Indian pacer Bhuveshwar Kumar is also facing the same issue as Dhawan. After the 2022 T20 World Cup, the Indian selectors sidelined him from white-ball cricket. He was India’s go-through bowler at one time but hasn’t had any chances in recent times. With the emergence of young pacers, it looked like the end for Bhuvi. He has played 121 ODIs and has 141 wickets to his name. Bhuvneshwar is unlikely to feature in the World Cup squad, so he might retire after the Cricket World Cup 2023.
2. Ravichandran Ashwin:
Another big name who is not part of India’s scheme of things in ODIs is Ravichandran Ashwin. The veteran off-spinner is a regular in red-ball cricket but hasn’t had many chances in white-ball format. With Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzi Chahal, and Ravi Bishnoi available in the team, India haven’t given Ashwin an opportunity. It looks like the 36-year-old will also decide to end his ODI career after the Cricket World Cup 2023, with not many chances for him in the format. So far, he has picked up 151 wickets in 111 ODI innings.
1. Rohit Sharma:
Indian captain Rohit Sharma can be another big name because it is unlikely that he will play in the 2027 World Cup. So the Cricket World Cup 2023 might be the last World Cup for Rohit. After its end, he might retire from ODIs. As seen in the T20I format, the Indian selectors have almost dropped him from the shorter format since the 2022 T20 World Cup. So he might himself announce his ODI retirement and focus on Test cricket. But before that, Rohit will have a job to take India to victory in the coming tournament.
