Top 5 fastest recorded triple centuries in first-class cricket
Tanmay Agarwal recently recorded the fastest triple century in first-class cricket.
Hyderabad opening batter Tanmay Agarwal recently made his entry into the cricketing record books after playing a scintillating knock in a Ranji Trophy game against Arunachal Pradesh. Tanmay Agarwal broke the record for the fastest triple century in first-class cricket and also smashed 26 sixes, which is the most by a batter in a first-class innings. Tanmay broke the record of Colin Munro who smashed 23 sixes against Central District while playing for Auckland.
Before Tanmay Agarwal, there were a few big names in international cricket who played similar knocks in first-class cricket. South Africa’s domestic cricketer Marco Marais, in 2017, hit a magnificent triple century in a South African provincial domestic three-day tournament. Let’s have a look at the top five batters with the fastest triple centuries in first-class cricket.
5. Ken Rutherford (New Zealanders) – 234 balls Vs DB Close’s XI 1986 :
Former New Zealand batter Ken Rutherford smashed a triple ton against DB Close’s XI in 1986. Rutherford took only 234 balls to play a record-breaking knock during New Zealand’s tour of England in 1986. Ken Rutherford scored 317 runs at Scarborough and created history.
Ken Rutherford played 56 test matches and scored 2465 runs for New Zealand, He scored only three test centuries in his career.
4. Frank Woolley (MCC) – 230 balls Vs Tasmania 1912 :
Legendary English batter Frank Woolley is fondly remembered for his magnificent batting performances in an era where bowlers dominated the game. Frank Woolley’s knock is fourth in the list of fastest triple centuries in first-class cricket.
Fran Woolley smashed a 230-ball triple ton while playing for MCC against Australian domestic side Tasmania in 1912. Frank Woolley played 64 test matches for England and scored 3283 runs with five test centuries.
3. Charles Macartney (Australians) – 221 balls Vs Nottinghamshire 1921 :
Charles Macartney is one of the legendary batters to have played for Australia in test cricket. Macartney represented Australia from 1907 to 1926. Macartney played a historic triple century knock against Nottinghamshire during Australia’s iconic tour of England in 1921.
Charles Macartney scored his triple century in 221 balls. He played 35 test matches and scored 2131 runs with seven test centuries for Australia.
2. Marco Marais (Border) – 191 balls Vs Eastern Province 2017 :
Marco Marais played a scintillating knock for his home state Border against Eastern Province in South African provincial cricket. He scored a 191 ball triple ton against Eastern Province and went on to smash 35 fours and 13 sixes during his blistering knock in East London.
Marco Marais is currently playing in South African domestic cricket and still hasn’t gotten an opportunity to represent South Africa at international level.
1. Tanmay Agarwal (Hyderabad) – 147 balls Vs Arunachal Pradesh 2024 “
Hyderabad opening batter Tanmay Agarwal shattered all the records when he brouught up his maiden triple ton in just 147 balls. Tanmay Agarwal played a blistering knock against Arunachal Pradesh in Ranji Trophy 2024 and broke the record of South African Marco Marais.
Tanmay Agarwal went on to score 366 runs in just 181 balls with 32 fours and 26 sixes. Agarwal currently holds the record for the fastest triple ton in first-class cricket.
