5 big records of Yuvraj Singh that Abhishek Sharma could break

Abhishek Sharma has developed himself into one of the best batters to have played for India in the T20I cricket.

Indian batter Abhishek Sharma is currently ranked number one in the latest ICC T20I rankings. He is among the most feared batters in the format right now and is in red-hot form heading into the T20 World Cup 2026.

Abhishek Sharma remains India’s biggest hope heading into the ICC event, starting from February 7. He has been hitting the ball sweetly and in a short span of time has developed himself into one of the finest batters in the format.

The southpaw has consistently given his team rapid starts inside the powerplay, which has helped the team take the initiative from the opposition very early in the game. He has played with the same attacking approach both against the pacers and the spinners. He is unafraid to get out and is not worried about the fear of failure. This is a massive reason why Abhishek is able to approach games without any baggage.

Sharma has been mentored by former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who himself was a destructive player with the bat during his time. In his prime, Yuvraj had one of the best bat swings and tormented bowlers from any opposition.

Abhishek has modelled his game very much after Yuvraj and can go on to become one of India’s best all-rounders going forward. He has played only T20Is for India so far. However, it should not be long before he makes his ODI and Test debuts for India.

Meanwhile, in this feature, we take a look at five records of Yuvraj Singh that Abhishek Sharma could break in the near future.

1) Fastest fifty by an Indian in T20Is

Yuvraj Singh currently holds the record for scoring the fastest fifty by an Indian batter in just 12 balls. He scored 58 off just 16 balls against England in 2007 in T20 World Cup. Sharma also joined this list after scoring his fifty off just 14 balls in the third T20I against New Zealand in Guwahati, 2026. He went onto scored 68* off just 20 balls, taking India to victory. With the form he is in, it should not be long before Abhishek surpasses Yuvraj’s record.

2) Six sixes in an over

Yuvraj Singh is also the only Indian batter so far to hit six sixes in an over in T20Is. He achieved the feat against England in the T20 World Cup 2007, smacking Stuart Broad all over the park. It was also the match where Yuvraj Singh scored the quickest fifty by an Indian in T20Is. Abhishek has already hit 86 sixes in just 37 T20I matches for India. He loves hitting big sixes, and given his love for hitting sixes, this Yuvraj record might be broken as well.

3) Highest strike rate in a T20I innings for India (50-plus score)

This record is also held by Yuvraj Singh currently for India. During his 16-ball 58 against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup, Yuvraj had a strike rate of 362.50. Abhishek’s career strike rate in T20Is is close to 195. Meanwhile, he struck at a strike rate of 340 during his 20-ball 68* against New Zealand in Guwahati. Abhishek Sharma, with all his batting prowess, can overtake Yuvraj Singh’s strike rate as well.

4) Only Indian player with a fifty-plus score and a five-wicket haul in ODI World Cup game

Abhishek Sharma is yet to play ODIs for India, but he can surpass Yuvraj Singh’s record in ODI cricket as well. As of now, Yuvraj Singh is the only Indian male cricketer to take a fifer and score a fifty-plus score in an ODI World Cup match. He achieved the feat in the 2011 World Cup match against Ireland in Bengaluru. He took 5/31 in 10 overs and then went onto score 50 off 75 balls in a winning cause for India. Abhishek Sharma also bowls useful overs for India and is developing into a key all-rounder for India. He can certainly challenge this record held by Yuvraj in the near future.

5) Most Player of the Match awards in a single World Cup

Yuvraj Singh holds this record along with Rohit Sharma. Both of them have won four Player of the Match awards for India. While Yuvraj won them in the 2011 World Cup, Rohit had his moment in the 2019 World Cup. Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Aravinda de Silva also won four Player of the Match awards in Sri Lanka’s victorious 1996 World Cup campaign.

As of now, Abhishek Sharma is yet to play ODIs for India. It is just a matter of time before he makes his debut in the 50-over format for India. Given the kind of player he is, he can certainly challenge this Yuvraj Singh record as well.
