List of batsmen to hit 5 sixes in an over in IPL history

Only five batsmen have hit five sixes in an over in the IPL.

Over the years in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the stature of the batters has grown exponentially with the franchises looking for power-hitters in their ranks. If you can dagger the ball at will, you will be the most sought-after commodity in the IPL. Franchises have splurged money on fierce strikers of the ball.

Six-hitting is an art, mastered by only a few – would have been apt to say a decade or so ago. The modern-day age has such players in abundance. In today’s contemporary cricket, six-hitting abilities are a must if you are a batter. If you can hit the ball a long distance, you will be one of the most demanded products in the IPL as shown over the years. The stocks of players with the ability to strike the ball right from the word go, without wasting any time, have risen to the top. To have such kind of players in your setup is a luxury for any team.

Since the inception of the IPL, there have been only five batters who have clobbered five sixes in an over. On that note, let’s take a look at the list of batters to hit five sixes in an over in the IPL.

Full list of batters to hit 5 sixes in an over in the IPL

1. Chris Gayle vs Pune Warriors India (Rahul Sharma), IPL 2012

The Universe Boss needs no introduction for his destructive abilities. Chris Gayle has stamped his authority with his bat over the years and is one of the most fierce strikers of the cricket ball across the globe. One such rendition was on display when Chris Gayle smacked Pune Warriors India’s Rahul Sharma for 5 sixes in one over in IPL 2012.

Complete mayhem by the face of destruction, Chris Gayle was in top gear from the word go. It was the 13th over of the RCB innings and Rahul Sharma was given the ball. After a single on the first ball by Saurabh Tiwary, Chris Gayle took the assault on Rahul Sharma and deposited him five times into the stands. His innings of 81 runs off just 48 balls included a total of eight maximums.

2. Rahul Tewatia vs Punjab Kings (Sheldon Cottrell), IPL 2020

The IPL 2020 game between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings is one of the most dramatic matches in the league’s history. Chasing the target of 224 runs, RR scored 173 runs in 17 overs. At that time, they needed 51 runs off 18 balls, and Rahul Tewatia was struggling big time with only 17 runs coming off his bat in 23 balls.

IPL, where heroes are made within a few balls, and such was Rahul Tewatia’s story to prominence. The 18th over bowled by Sheld Cottrell saw Rahul Tewatia’s career take a new shape. He clobbered the left-arm pacer for 5 back-to-back sixes to completely change the complexion of the game. One of the greatest finishes to a game ever in the IPL, Rahul Tewatia scripted a story for ages.

3. Ravindra Jadeja vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (Harshal Patel), IPL 2021

One cannot ask for a perfect game than this for Ravindra Jadeja. He shone with both bat and ball and brought his midas touch into play. Batting first, CSK’s innings was going nowhere until the last over, where Jadeja was on 26 runs in 21 balls. Out of nowhere, Jadeja started punishing Harshal Patel with five huge sixes who was having a good match up until then. His final score was 62* off just 28 balls.

CSK eventually ended at 191 runs and Harshal Patel’s 19th over was the joint-most expensive over in the history of IPL. In response with the ball, Jadeja plucked three crucial wickets and won the game for his team.

4. Rinku Singh vs Gujarat Titans (Yash Dayal), IPL 2023

A game for ages, with many stats broken in a single game, this game will be one of the most dramatic games in the rich history of the IPL. A game miles away from the reach of KKR, found their new hero in Rinku Singh who won the game for them from the jaws of defeat. Almost dead and buried after Rashid Khan’s hat trick in the same match, Rinku Singh had different ideas. Coming out to bat, he started pounding the bowlers all around the park. It was Yash Dayal’s final over the game that took the most beating.

Bowling the last over to defend 29 runs, Gujarat Titans had one foot towards victory already. Then Rinku Singh did something unfathomable. He hit five back-to-back sixes as clean as a whistle to win it for KKR. Rinku Singh produced a blinder (48* off 21 balls) that the streets of Ahmedabad will not forget for a long time.

5. Riyan Parag vs Kolkata Knight Riders (Moeen Ali), IPL 2025

Fifth instance of a batter hitting five sixes in an over in the IPL came in IPL 2025 in a clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

While chasing 207, RR were 66/3 at the end of seven overs and that’s when their captain in the game Riyan Parag walked in to bat. Soon after Riyan’s arrival, RR lost two wickets in the over and were then reduced to 71/5. However, captain Riyan didn’t let the pressure get the better of him. He then stabilized the innings and then hit Moeen Ali for five sixes in 13th over of the chase. Riyan went on to hit a six in the very first delivery he faced in the next over as well to make it six sixes off six consecutive deliveries.

He later finished his innings at 95 off 45 deliveries and missed out on his maiden IPL hundred. RR, however, lost the game by one run in a last-over thriller.
